

Born May 2, 1923, in Fairfield, IL, to Alonzo Raab Cable and Zulieme Butler Cable. He married Marilyn Louise (Harris) Cable on July 14th, 1953, who preceded him in death on May 25, 2005. He married Myrna (Hanlin) Cable on July 3, 2011. He was also predeceased by his parents and 2 sisters, Amy Schultz and Glenna Fillingham.
John was a proud WWII Army Veteran. On March 27, 1944, he was on the cover of Life Magazine, the 4th man getting off the boat at Anzio Beach in Salerno, Italy. Mr. Cable was a decorated Staff Sergeant with 2 Purple Hearts, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, a Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster, 2 Battle Stars, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and numerous other awards. He was honorably discharged due to injuries on May 14, 1945. For many years he travelled to different locations in the United States to attend an annual reunion for survivors of Anzio Beach. In May of 2009, the reunion was held in Italy at Anzio Beach where the group reminisced and toured many of the war sites.
Mr. Cable retired from General Electric (GE) in 1984 after 30 years of service as a Salesman. He often enjoyed playing a round of golf and his highlight was his hole-in-one in Sept 1989. John was an active resident at Westminster Village from 2006 until his recent illness and was often found in the “train” room acting as Engineer for the miniature trains he would run for the resident’s family and friends. He was also coordinator of the sound system for their weekly Vespers service.
Survivors include his wife, Myrna, two children, Tony (Carol) Cable of Bloomington, and Joni (Gordon) Hanebutt, Orlando, FL, four grandchildren, Brian Cable, Brad Cable, Jake Hanebutt, and Jenni Hanebutt, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and liked by all he met. Bring him his favorite cup of coffee and he would lovingly provide stories about his family, or tell you about his time in the service.
Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb 18, 2018 with the Funeral following at 2:00 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home, the Rev Jim Warren officiating. Military Honors will be accorded at East Lawn Funeral Home.
