

Magnolia Smith, 81, of Bloomington died April 28, 2015 at Advocate BroMenn Hospital in Bloomington. She was born July 14, 1933 in Jonesville, LA to Lee Bertha Major and Alex Smith. Magnolia was always a singer, starting out in youth choirs at church, then as a part of a family quartet that toured all over Louisiana. When she relocated to Bloomington in 1961 she joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and their adult choir. She worked for the old St. Joseph’s Hospital and for more than 30 years was in housekeeping at Advocate BroMenn Hospital. She has been a member of New Hope Baptist Church on Oakland in Bloomington for many years. There, she was President of the Mother’s Board and a member of the New Hope Choir. Magnolia is survived by her 3 sons; Robert (Joni), James (Rhonda) and Clyde Butcher; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and her sister Lillie Davis. Visitation will be from 10am-12pm Tuesday, May 5, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 701 E Oakland Ave. Bloomington, Illinois 61701. The service will begin at 12:00pm, Rev. David Brown officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Garden Mausoleum at East Lawn Memorial Gardens following the service.
