Mary was born in Taylorville, IL on August 23, 1952 at St. Vincent Hospital.
Mary is survived by her children Rockie (Kendall), Penny (Scott), and Megan, her beloved grandchildren Austin, Astrid, Murphy, Clarke, Crosby, and Logan, and her partner of more than 30 years, Roman Gonzalez, her siblings Pat Kauffold, Ann Murtaugh, and Don Kauffold and several nieces and nephews. Mary would also want to acknowledged she is survived by her ex-husband, Rockie Zeigler and his wife, her “sister wife”, Nancy Zeigler. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Vance and Helen Kauffold (Mallach) and her uncle, Gabriel Telot.
Mary attended Illinois State University and got her bachelor’s degree in English. She later went on to earn her master’s degree in Special Education and did so while raising three small children and working full-time. After graduation she got a job as a teacher at Hammitt School (The Baby Fold). She would spend her entire career working at Hammitt where her students were her passion and her co-workers became her family. It cannot be overstated the love that Mary had for Hammitt School and the incredible impact that the Baby Fold had on her life.
Mary will be remembered by all as someone who was full of life. She was incredibly funny, and all those that knew her will miss laughing with her. Mary loved her cats, peace signs, tie-dye, democrats, Joakim Noah, crossword puzzles, soap operas, the Beatles, blasting music in her car, dying her hair crazy colors, shoes, hoodies, coffee, chocolate, MSNBC, and her regular nail appointments with her friend, Macie. While these are the things that she loved, but its only right to mention what she disliked more than anything in the world, Donald Trump. She will be remembered by her grandkids as always having chocolate and fudge for them, and she always had $20 in her wallet for Austin. She will be remembered by her kids as a mother who loved them fiercely.
We ask that everyone wear tie-dye and jeans to the visitation.
Visitation will be held Monday February 10th at East Lawn Funeral Home from 10:00am – 12:00pm with a short service at 12:00pm.
In lieu of flowers please donate to The Baby Fold in her name.
