Nina Louise Murphy was born June 12, 1929 to Dr. John Luther Murphy (9/19/1877-9/4/1944) and Louise Lee Graham Murphy (12/17/1894-5/7/1988) of Chicago, Ill. She had one sibling, brother Freddy, who passed on at age 6. A graduate of Senn High School, Nina completed a 2 year BA program at Knox College, Galesburg,Ill, afterwhich earned an RN Nursing Degree from Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital in 1951. On April 21,1951, she was married to Richard Edgar Miller, of Aurora,Ill, also a Knox College Graduate. She worked 8 years in hospital nursing, specializing in neo-natal care, before becoming a full-time homemaker and mother to four children. A devoted wife and dedicated mother to her children, she also provided long-term care for her mother Louise, until her passing in 1988. Always comfortable as a caregiver in a home and hospital setting, she returned to work in the early 1990s as Director of Volunteer Services at Humana Hospital, Indianapolis, IN for a period of years before managing long-term in-home care of her beloved husband, Richard E. "Dick" Miller, until his passing in 2006.
Dick and Nina Miller resided in several states during the course of their 55- year marriage, and Nina was always proud of living in 'seven different states' throughout their lives together, locations included Libertyville,Ill; Omaha,NE; Denver,CO; Phoenix,AZ; St. Louis,MO; and a final relocation to Carmel,IN which they made their home from 1977-2015.
Nina valued family and friendships above all else, and enjoyed written and verbal correspondence with a wide circle of those she held dear in her life: A large, treasured, extended family, and close friendships spanning from childhood years throughout the various places and phases of a lifetime. She enjoyed collecting cards, filing them away until the perfect occasion for the right person presented itself. She enjoyed travelling throughout the US and to many international destinations. She loved dancing, dining out, and attending social gatherings, whether it be family events or couples' Bridge nights. She began an endearing family tradition of planting trees in memory of loved ones who passed away, naming them, nurturing them, and watching her living Memorials grow. Other hobbies included tennis, skiing, and avidly supporting the activities of her children, which included a wide variety of activities-various sports, music, horseback riding, etc. She was a proud grandmother of five.
Nina is survived by her son, Riley Richard Miller, and wife Beth of Bloomington, IN; son Mark Andrew Miller of Nashville, TN; and her five grandchildren - Joey Jenkins, Jeffrey Jenkins, Alice Ellison Miller, Waylon Miller, and Clark Miller.
She is predeceased by husband Richard Edgar Miller (12/12/2006); son Ronald John Miller (9/21 2016); daughter Christine Louise Miller Jenkins (1/22/2002); brother Frederick Luther Murphy (4/12/1937).
It was Nina's expressed wishes to have no formal funeral services or interment. A celebration of Life and Legacy may be announced at a later date.
