Robert was a firefighter who retired from the City of Bloomington in 1991 after 31 years of service. He received “Firefighter of the Year” in 1973 and 1998. He received a Life Saving Award in August 2001. He previously worked as an EMT, a truck driver for various companies, and was a bricklayer as well. His masonry work included various buildings throughout Bloomington and on the IU campus.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, and being outdoors.
He was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, and the National Rifle Association of America. He was also a charter member of Southside Christian Church in Bloomington.
Survivors include his wife Doris (Moore) Deckard, to whom he was married 61 years, August 8, 1958, daughter Kim Deckard, grandsons Maxwell and Miles Deckard-Biggs (sons of Kim Deckard and Amanda Biggs), sister-in-law, Wanda (Lind) Deckard, nephew, Dennis Deckard, nieces, Karen (Atwood) Wisley, and Kathy (Atwood) Crouch.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Fred Deckard, sister Chloe Atwood, and his son, Kevin Deckard.

Visitation for Robert will be held on Thursday evening, March 12, 2020 from 4-8 p.m. in Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel, 700 W. Gourley Pike, Bloomington, Indiana 47404. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. also in the funeral home with Pastors Harold Godsey and Keith Wisley officiating.
Robert will be entombed in the Valhalla Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bloomington, Indiana.
