

Eileen Somerville died peacefully on July 15, 2015 surrounded by her loving family in Boca Raton, FL. Eileen was born on September 1, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., to Henry and Mary Somerville. She is survived by her sister Lucy Hall, her sister Marion McDevitt, her brother William Somerville, and her sister-in-law Marilyn Somerville. Eileen is also survived by her nineteen nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased in death by her brother Charlie Somerville and her sister-in-law Dolores Somerville, her brother Larry Somerville, her brother-in-law Ed McDevitt, and her sister-in-law Mary Adele Somerville. Eileen also leaves behind many dear friends dating all the way back to nursing school, as well as other lifelong friends and neighbors from the many places where she lived and worked. Eileen devoted her life to caring for cancer patients and teaching nurses to care for cancer patients. She
graduated from Little Company of Mary Nursing School in 1954. Eileen began her career in Oncology Nursing in 1965 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City. Eileen then returned to school at Florida International University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1978. Eileen attended Texas Women's University in Houston and received her Master’s in Medical Oncology Clinical Nursing. Eileen then worked at MD
Anderson in Houston as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. She worked at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Assistant Professor of Nursing. Finally before retiring, Eileen worked for the second largest bone marrow transplant program in the country at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Eileen published many articles, and she was a frequent guest speaker at seminars. She edited several oncology nursing books written with the Oncology Nursing Society. Eileen helped countless cancer patients and their families both directly and by teaching other nurses how to care for cancer patients. Eileen loved time with family, traveling, snow skiing, golfing and reading. We have laughed with Eileen, learned from her, leaned on her
and loved her dearly. She has left us with beautiful memories. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
