Fred was born into a proud Navy family on October 14, 1938, in Providence, RI, to Frederick A. and Gertrude M. (Brennan) Shaw. The first of three sons, Fred attended Blessed Sacrament Grammar School, Providence, RI, as well as Father Duenas Memorial High School, Guam, Marianas Islands, and St. Columb’s College, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, before graduating from LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI, in 1956.
Not one to sit still for long, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956, serving aboard the USS Chipola (AO-63), USS Serrano (AGS-24), and USS The Sullivans (DD-537). It was during his 10 years in the Navy that he met the love of his life, Susie, his constant companion for 56 years until her passing in June, 2021.
Upon leaving the Navy, Fred joined IBM, where he was happily employed for 30 years before retiring in 1996. During those years, Fred and family moved from Cape Canaveral, FL to Pine Plains, NY, and Yokohama, Japan, before eventually settling in Boca Raton in 1982.
Fred was a faithful and longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Boca Raton, serving as a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and as part of the Church’s Ministry to the Homebound.
Fred is survived by son Fred (Jennifer) Shaw; daughter Molly Arroyo; 6 grandchildren (Katie, Lilly, Chris, Spencer, Melissa, Damion, and Krys) and 4 great grandchildren; brothers Mike (Joan) of Jasper, GA, and Tom, of Winston-Salem, NC.
