To the delight of his father Ferdinand, John proudly joined the Nassau County Police Department, and served with honor for more than two decades. His dedication to his work earned him numerous awards and commendations for bravery during his long and prestigious service. He even got to work side by side with his lifelong friend, Ed Castellano, as partners for part of his career. John was extremely proud of his years in law enforcement, yet there was much more to this great man. John and his wife JoAnn raised their beautiful family in Levittown and then Hicksville before retiring to south Florida in 1988. Their children, grandchildren, and later their great-grandchildren were the center of their lives, with a close circle of extended family and treasured friends ever-present. John and JoAnn enjoyed traveling the world together, making several trips to Italy to explore their roots. John was especially adored by his grandchildren whom he delighted with rides on his motorcycle, his gifts for jokes and storytelling, or a little tune on the harmonica, guitar, or keyboard. Add drawing and painting to the list of John’s many talents. After caring for his lifelong love, JoAnn throughout illness and grieving her loss in 2013, John was lucky to have a second chance at happiness with his partner Madeline. In John’s own words, Maddy saved his life in more ways than one. John was a loving husband, a dedicated friend, a giving father, and the most fun and loyal grandfather anyone could hope for. A great man who never met a stranger, John’s legacy will live on through the memories of those he loved throughout his life.
John was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn, his beloved parents Ferdinand and Josephine, his loving brothers Joseph and Fred, and his best friend Ed Castellano. John is survived by his children LoriAnn Esposito (David Warner), John Catalano, Jr. (Felice Hauptman Catalano); and Michael Catalano (Joy Barlow Catalano); his cousin Barbara Ann Catalano Wexler (Warren); grandchildren Andrew, James, Christina (Joe), Angelea, Jacob, Luke, and Isabella; great-granddaughters Sophia Grace, Amelia Rose, Riley Mae, and Cecelia Jane; his devoted partner Madeline Ruiz; many nieces and nephews; and treasured lifelong friends. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests donations to be made in John’s memory to Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).
