One of the sweetest souls I've met gone way too soon.

Thank you for sharing my love of gudetama, cats, mac and cheese, and crocs. We had some really amazing times together that I'll never forget. I wish I knew the day before this happened that it would be the last time I'd talk to you. I will miss the funny videos you always send me and our snapchat streak. I appreciate you for always brightening my day and checking in on me. You have always been a caring person, a great friend, and an amazing cat momma. I hope heaven has lots of kitties and kbbq! See you again one day.

Mariana started at Henderson in second grade during the 2005-2006 school year. She was in Lyndsay Tolerton’s classroom. I remember they were looking for a tutor and Mrs. Tolerton was telling me about this new student. It has been a while, but I remember her saying that she had a lot of energy, she LOVED to talk, I would have to work to keep her focused, but she was the sweetest thing. Looking back, that I think that is probably how I have always thought of Mariana.

Tutoring didn’t last long, because I was lucky enough to be Mariana’s 3rd grade teacher. I took a picture of her in an astronaut costume for her biography project. I’d be lying if I said I don’t always have that little Mariana in my head and in my heart.  I’ve spent a bit of time looking back through photos and laughing at the facial expressions that are 100% Mariana.

When we moved into the new building, I came across a composition book that had been a student’s summer journal. It didn’t have a name on it, but it was full of 7/8 year old ramblings. As I read, I realized that it could only have belonged to Mariana. It was full of stories of adventures with her parents. 

Even though she was only in my class for the 2006-2007 school year, I have followed her accomplishments and adventures through the years. She was always one to pop in and say hi. I got updates from Ana and then connected on social media with Mariana. About 10 years after she was in my class, Mariana was my daughter Caitlin’s 1st grade aftercare counselor. Last year, when I posted about comments Caitlin got selling Girl Scout cookies, Mariana became her biggest advocate. She sent words of encouragement and started hustling Samoas. 

Ana always thanks me for loving Mariana. I know that Mariana grew up surrounded by love. She was passionate about the things and people she loved. She knew how to show others that she cared. The thing is that it is easy to love Mariana because Mariana LOVED. She will always be in my heart.

You were so full of life. I will cherish these memories forever.  You radiated such positivity and were always there for me in high school. We had so much fun together back then.

I am still in disbelief, I know we lost touch over the years, but I will always remember our friendship when we were younger. You were so much fun to be around we really knew how to party back then. So many memories we shared together.

Father & daughter's day where Mariana got the baseball ball

She was most cheerful, kind and one of a kind person I’ve ever come across. Always woke up happy knowing she was by my side. She was the best and I am very grateful for the time we got to spend together.

My heart goes out to you Ms Gazco. I will continually pray for peace for you and your family. May the happier memories bring you strength during this difficult time.

It pains me to write this... Mariana was a light in my life at some points when I needed it the most. She was truly her authentic self without any apologies. She cared for everybody around in ways that most people would not. She was selfless in thoughts, actions, and words. She taught me to be comfortable in my own skin and true meaning of not being influenced by those around her. I will miss her infections laugh, her bear hugs (although she was tiny), and the way she brought light to a room. I will miss her more than words can describe.

Mariana showed me the ropes when I was first hired at Henderson. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into working the aftercare program, but luckily I was paired with Mariana & I loved getting to know her ❤️ She always had a smile on her face & could light up any room she walked into! I loved hearing about her plans for the future & her love for criminal justice! She was such a great role model for the kids! 
Fast-forward to working alongside Ana these past years & getting frequent updates on Mariana has made my heart so happy! Seeing the love she had for life and for her family & friends was radiating! I’m so grateful for the memories we shared and I pray for peace during this most difficult time of grieving! Heaven has certainly  gained an angel! Mariana will always be remembered at Henderson.
