He was born on January 22, 1952, the youngest son of Bernard and Elsie Karel Raskin. Monte grew up in Union, New Jersey, attended Battle Hill Elementary School, Burnet Junior High School, and graduated from Union High School. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Kean University.
After graduating from college, Monte moved to Miami and started his first career as a stockbroker with Dean Witter Reynolds. He later joined his uncle, Herbert Raskin, in the retail shoe business and for years managed a number of successful shoe stores in Florida. In 2006, Monte embarked on a new career as a licensed Hearing Aid Specialist, working initially for Beltone and later for Costco. He was largely responsible for growing the Costco hearing aid department in Boca Raton to the busiest and most productive in the country.
His family will remember him as a loving and devoted son, brother, nephew, uncle, and cousin who kept the family lore alive for his nieces and nephews by enthusiastically retelling tales of childhood antics and adventures of the Raskin brothers as they grew up in Union with a larger-than-life father and a loving, patient mother they adored and respected. Monte was a good and loyal friend and maintained many strong relationships over the years. Many of his best friends were elementary school classmates at Battle Hill. He visited regularly with his cohesive group of friends, both in New Jersey and in Florida, often over a game of golf. From the time he was a boy, Monte enjoyed sports. He was a talented athlete and revered the great Roberto Clemente as a personal hero. He spent many weekends attending a game or watching several on television—and was known to make the occasional bet. Monte loved his home and his community in Boca Raton which, he often noted, has the best restaurants “south of Jersey.”
Monte is survived by his brother Martin Raskin and wife Jane Serene Raskin; his brother Howard Raskin; four nieces and nephews, Melissa Raskin, Stephanie Raskin, David Raskin and Mark Raskin; and Demarion Klalo, the son of close friend Joe Klalo, with whom Monte had an especially close and loving relationship.
