Morris Eugene "Mickey" Thornton, 77, Boca Raton, FL was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Hospice By the Sea in Boca Raton, FL after a short, yet courageous battle with cancer. Longtime companion Betty (Robertson) Happel was present. Mickey was born on April 21, 1933 in Hickman County near Nashville, TN. Mickey proudly served his country in the US Naval Reserves in Detroit, Michigan. At a Navy dance, he met his soon-to-be wife, Viola Sylvia Bodnar. They were wed on Dec 29, 1951 for the next 27 years until her passing. He enjoyed employment as a Lineman with Michigan Bell. Mickey and brother Bill moved to South Florida with their families in the mid-1960's. Mickey reached a successful 45 year career mark before retiring from BellSouth, FL. Mickey loved the warm weather, fishing, boating, his pets, tinkering with home & car stuff, golfing, and, of course, playing the guitar. Mickey was much loved by all who knew him and he touched many lives.
Mickey was predeceased by his parents Loyd Lilborn Thornton and Mrs. Jimmy Mae Poteet Thornton Guirey. Also, passing before him were wife “Vi” Bodnar Thornton, siblings Laura Thornton Brugh, Bill Thornton, Edith Thornton Pongracz, & Kenny Thornton. He leaves behind his many friends and family, including: in Michigan - oldest brother Stan (Jean) Thornton, sister Ethel (Bob) Clark, sisters-in-law Joyce Thornton, & Barb Thornton. In Florida – Mrs. Ruth Scardino, and (ex) daughter in law, Karen Molinksi. Mickey leaves 6 children – Mike (Cyndy), Alan (Louise), Mark, Adam (Angela), daughters Brenda Heil and Wendy (Darren) Lindh. Mickey leaves a legacy of 10 grandchildren - Shawn Thornton, Tammy (Jason) Thornton Greene, Eric Thornton, Trent Thornton, Lindsay (Michael) Thornton Sward, AJ Thornton, Austin Thornton, Alexis Heil, TJ Heil, Trent Lindh, 6 great-grandchildren – Kyle Greene, Kayla Greene, Taylor Sward, Emily Sward, Evie Thornton and the youngest of which is his namesake, Maddoxx Mickey Heil - born on August 13, 2010.
The family wishes to extend a special acknowledgment of gratitude to Mrs Candi Happel Benefield for her tenderness, constant care and vigilant watch over Dad throughout his illness and surgeries. The family also would like to thank next door neighbors Tom & Kelly Deptula and Pete & Belinda Kessel for their kindness and care of Dad these many years, treating him as they would their own father.
Mickey respectfully requested no funeral or memorial services on his behalf. Therefore, on Sunday, November 7th, available family members and friends gathered in Mickey's favorite spot – his backyard - under the shade of the hurricane-worn ficus tree and old cement back porch for food, prayer circle and a celebration of his life. Mickey's final resting place will be the Veteran's South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL pending arrangements under the careful direction of Mr. Marcos Boronat, Babione-Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Boca Raton, FL.
