He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edward Albert Nimmo of Ohio and Sarah Beatrice (Holliday) Nimmo of Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sarah, and his brother Al.
His family later moved to Pekin, Illinois where “Holly” met Bonnie Lou (Ling) Nimmo, his truest love and the one he was destined to marry for 67 years and spend the rest of his life with. Bonnie survives and cherishes their joyous time together.
The fruit of their union is expressed in the descendants, Mark E. Nimmo (Nancy) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Michael R. Nimmo (Terri), who sadly passed away 4 years ago, Patti Graulich (Robert) of Florence, SC and Paula D. Beyer (Eric) of Bolivia, NC. The next generation, who “Pop” loved with a huge heart, consists of 12 grandchildren. The 3rd generation includes 14 great-grandchildren. “G Pop’s” favorite daily pastime was looking at pictures and reciting their names chronologically. If he was feeling sporty, he would recite them in reverse order.
Ed graduated DePauw University in 1957 and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He and Bonnie soon married. Shortly thereafter, he received orders to begin Pilot training with the US Air Force. He advanced through the ranks included piloting multiple aircraft, many as Command Pilot. He served a year in Vietnam, then was assigned to strategic planning at the Pentagon, Base Commander at Loring AFB, and Vice Wing Commander at McConnell AFB. He retired from the Air Force in 1983 as a full Colonel. Air Force and personal travel afforded Ed and Bonnie the opportunity to visit all 50 states.
After Air Force retirement, “The Colonel” commanded a junior ROTC unit at Central Cabarrus High School in North Carolina, developing young students for future leadership.
Ed and Bonnie volunteered their time with the Salvation Army and Epworth United Methodist Church in Concord, NC. Ed served as a volunteer at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (Atrium) for 15 years.
Small family service to be decided at a later date.
