

Mrs. Phelps was born March 24, 1943, in New Hanover County, daughter of the late Floyd T. Brittain and Odessa Mercer Brittain. Early in her career, she worked at Mintz Chevrolet for 26 years until she transitioned to Brunswick County Schools in the Finance Department where she worked until her retirement. Mrs. Phelps loved shopping, sewing, and taking trips to the mountains. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she worked in the church library. In her later years, her biggest passion was loving on her great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Chad Phelps and two brothers, Hubert Keith Brittain and David Earl Brittain.
Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Phelps of Bolivia; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Phelps of Shallotte; two grandchildren, Kristin Phelps and Megan Jones; ten great grandchildren, Ayden, Justus, Issak, Ty, Easten, Nick, Oaklen, Ethan, Eli, and Demaryius; nieces, Meleta Humbert and husband Glenn and Geraldine Elliott; and nephews, Alan Brittain and wife Cindy and David Brittain.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 7, 2026 at two o'clock in the afternoon at Antioch Baptist Church with her son, Jeffrey Phelps, Pastor Johnny Chase, and Pastor Brian Raleigh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Ayden Phelps, Justus Jones, Alan Brittain, Stanley Rogers, Megan Jones, and Jarett Elliott. Honorary pallbearers will be her great grandsons.
