Evelyn Chavis Nowland, 76, of Laurinburg, NC. transitioned peacefully to her eternal home on the morning of March 2, 2026 at Novant Regional Hospital in Bolivia, NC. While her absence leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, we find great comfort in knowing she has been released from her earthly struggles and is no resting in the light of Source.

Evelyn dedicated 25 years of service to Scotland County, where she retired as the Manager of Financial Services for Social Services in Laurinburg, NC. Upon retirement, she fulfilled her dream of coastal living, spending the last 14 years in Bolivia, NC at Sunset Harbor where the peace of the water mirrored her own spirit.

An avid reader and traveler, Evelyn found beauty in the world and earth she tended in her gardens. One of her greatest joys was the simple pleasure of eating lobster in Bar Harbor, Maine, a memory her family will always cherish.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years. Retired Sgt. Maj. Tom Nowland, her four children, Reggie Nowland, Alvia Dawn Chavis, Christy Renee Staddie, and Scotty Nowland; her sisters, Lorie Hilburn and Mary Romaine; as well as 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ethel Chavis; her brother, James; and her sisters, Mildred and Gladys. She was a native of Laurinburg, NC, where she grew up and surrounded by her loving family.

A Celebration of LIfe will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 14, at Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church, located at 401 S. Main St., Laurinburg, NC 28352
