Elmer Marc Biddison, Jr, of Wilmington, North Carolina passed away 8 September 2010 following a short illness. He is survived by his son, Marc Biddison (Beth) of Wilmington; and two daughters: Mickie Stalcup (Phillip) of Sterling, Virginia and Dea Biddison of London, England and grandchildren Marc Biddison IV and Stephen Biddison. He was also the proud stepfather of Karan Cline (Jim) of Corvallis, OR, Robbie Fogleman (Lynne) and Michael Gay (Dawn) of Wilmington. Marc was predeceased by his son Jon (Cindy), and wives Barabara Chesser Biddison and Alice Maxine Biddison. His sister, Betty Warner (Boone) also predeceased him.
Marc was born July 27th, 1927, in Louisville, Kentucky to Marc and Mayme Biddison. As a child, the family moved to Athens, Ohio, where he attended both high school and Ohio University. His career as an instrumentation engineer began with E.I. Dupont in 1953 in Aiken, South Carolina, and he retired in Wilmington after 30+ years service. Recognized for his pioneering work in Process Control Instrumentation, Marc was awarded a patent by the US government for a pneumatic deniering apparatus as a young man of 39.
Marc was active in both professional and social organizations. He had been an active member of the Instrument Society of America; he represented the Southeastern chapter during an exchange trip to China in 1984. He also was a member of the Elks Club and the Masonic Temple. As a young parent, Marc coached both little league baseball and football but in later years became more interested in golf. Marc had a unique view of the game; this allowed him to express his individual style on most of the local courses. Many who have played with him would say that although an 18-hole round appeared to torture him, he truly enjoyed the game and would play at any chance.
Marc always felt extremely lucky and fortunate in his life. He believed that he had the best job in the world; the best wives; the best children and certainly the best dogs. Marc was a man of strongly held and defended principles. E. B. Hall wrote of Voltaire: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” And for those of us who knew and loved Marc, this principle of free speech describes him best.
