He married Rebecca (Suzy) Allred on November 28, 1969.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Simon & Florence Penny, and sister, Shirley Stephenson.
His is survived by his wife: Suzy Penny, and children: Jan Wilson (Bryan) and Brad Penny (Carrie), grandchildren: Whitni Leedy (Jason), John Drish III (Sydney) and two great grandchildren: Bryson & Colson Leedy and his sister, Myrtle Milliken.
He was born in Raleigh, NC to Simon Roy & Florence Penny. They made the move to Carolina Beach when Robert was quite young, so he always called the beach "home".
He retired from General Electric, where he worked many positions throughout his career.
Robert's love of the ocean began as a lifeguard in Carolina Beach. He was an avid surfer and fisherman.
In his younger days he was known as "LUM", but his family proudly called him "Papaw".
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Carolina Coastal Federation.
