Afra Estel Edejer Hebron was born on November 23, 1913 to Juan and Andrea Edejer. Afra grew up with three brothers and three sisters in Candelaria, Zambales, Philippines. She married the late Leon Ednalino Hebron II on November 23, 1933.
While raising their children in the Philippines, Afra owned and managed her own retail and wholesale business at the local market. She sold produce from their farm, including mangoes, rice, coconuts, fish, and various vegetables. She would also carry the produce and travel via “jeepney” to reach customers in different towns. A constant hard worker, Afra woke up every morning at 4 AM to tend to the family business and make sure their kids were fed and ready for school.
A solid faith in God was very important to Afra. She was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Zambales. Afra provided strong leadership to the town of Candelaria, but also enjoyed folk dancing at the town fiestas. Her hobbies included sewing and crocheting, and hand-weaving “banig” mats.
Afra moved to San Diego, CA in 1972, and her husband, Leon, later followed in 1979. She worked as a caregiver and seamstress for sixteen years in San Diego, where she also played an active role in raising many of her grandchildren. During her free time, she enjoyed tending to her home garden of vegetables and roses, playing solitaire in the afternoon, and watching the soap opera, “All My Children.”
Afra was a very loving and generous mother and grandmother, and will be missed by many. She is survived by eight children: Revelina Edquid, Violeta Tagulao, Aniceto Hebron, Adolfo Hebron, Jeanita David, Claro Hebron, Jesus Hebron, and Proserpina Abad, all of San Diego, CA. Afra also had thirty grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Poway, CA, on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 10:00 AM.
