

Al was born in Bridgeport, CT to Albert and Helena Burkat. His stepfather was in the navy, and as a result, they moved around a bit. When Al was ten years old, he came out to California. He lived in San Diego, Seeley, and San Francisco before settling in National City. Al graduated from Sweetwater Union High School.
In 1956 Al began his forty-five year career in the retail grocery industry. He was employed by Food Basket, which was later bought out by Lucky Stores, Alpha Beta, and Albertsons. The last twenty-eight years he was a store director.
He is survived by Tracy, his wife of thirty-five years; his children - Jon (Kathy) of Provo, UT, Cory (Jackie) of Provo, UT, Todd (Meritt), of San Diego, CA, and Amber Chivinski (Andrew) of San Diego, CA; his grandchildren - Dylan, Zach, Cole, Alec, Crista, Calli, Caidin, Caitlin, Cordell, Corbin, Chandler, Olivea, Collette, and Spencer. Al also leaves behind his youngest brother Leonard (Del) of Chula Vista, CA. He is preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, and brother.
His fondest childhood memories were of his time spent on the naval base in El Centro. Al was an avid sports fan with season tickets to the Chargers and Padres; and he loved the horses. He lived in Ocean Beach for nearly fifty years.
Al passed away at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA.
