

Everyone’s life is the sum total of all of the people they have met, the things they have done, the places they have gone. Maria “Bertila” Mejia was no exception. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Bertila will be remembered as a very exceptional person.
Bertila’s life journey began on April 2, 1940. She first greeted the world in Guamuchil, Sinaloa, Mexico. Her parents' names were Ramon Angulo and Epigmenia Felix. She was raised with two siblings, Maria De Los Angeles Valle and Julieta Gastelum. Bertila attended school in Sinaloa and completed up to the eighth grade.
Falling in love is a huge milestone for any person. Knowing that you have met that special someone is a magical feeling. Bertila experienced that with Jose Mejia and the couple exchanged wedding vows on January 18, 1960. The wedding took place in National City, California. Empathic and loyal, Bertila was committed to making her new family happy. She and Jose shared many loving years of marriage.
While everything a person does in life contributes to who they grow into, it is ultimately this same person who holds the most influence on the next generation. Bertila was blessed with three children, Jaime, Alonzo and Anjelica. Bertila worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs, raising her children in a positive and nurturing environment.
Later in life, Bertila was blessed with the gift of two granddaughters, Vanessa and Marlen.
Bertila enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in a number of different activities, including stitching, listening to her favorite music, going for walks, watching movies, dancing and traveling with her husband. She was always willing to share her interests with others.
Bertila Mejia left us on July 15, 2011. She passed away in the comfort of her home in Chula Vista, California of pneumonia due to Lewey Body Dementia. She was 71 years old. She is survived by her loving husband Jose Mejia, her children Jaime Mejia, Alonzo Mejia and Anjelica Mejia, her granddaughters Vanessa Cisneros and Marlen Mejia, as well as many other relatives and friends. Services were handled by Glen Abbey Mortuary. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Chula Vista on July 22, 2011. Bertila was laid to rest at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California.
Simply stated, Bertila was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being caring and giving, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Bertila leaves behind her a legacy of lifelong friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life Maria Bertila Mejia touched will always remember her with a smile.
