Carmen was born in Agoo, La Union, Philippines and raised by her loving Lola at Lolo (grandparents), Cresanta and Mariano. She graduated with a teaching degree from the University of the East in 1966, teaching elementary school students for several years. She met her future husband, Marcial, then an engineering student in Manila, and they immigrated to the U.S. with their families in the mid-1970’s. On March 6, 1976, Carmen and Marcial married and eventually settled in San Diego, raising two children, Maricar and Catherine.
Carmen was an avid traveler and had been to 40 countries and states in the U.S. She frequently planned trips with her loved ones and enjoyed sharing gifts and stories after her travels. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and was an active member of the Filipino Community of St. Michael’s, the Filipino Cursillo Movement and Rosary committee. Carmen was also devoted to taking care of her family and larger community, regularly visiting relatives and raising support for seminarians living in the Diocese of Malaybalay, Philippines.
After her children had grown, Carmen returned to the workforce and proudly worked for the State of California for 22 years. She found great meaning from her job and the people she served, and she made close connections with those she worked with. Carmen was known for her deep sense of faith, outspokenness, determination and stylishness, and she will be remembered for the love and dedicated care she gave to her family and community.
Carmen was preceded in her passing by her mother Marcelina, brother Julian, and sisters Providencia and Juliana. Her legacy is continued by her husband, Marcial, her two children, Maricar and Catherine and several siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.
