

Dan Mendez was born on July 3, 1952 to Carmen and Daniel G. Mendez at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA. He was raised in Chula Vista, attending Castle Park High School and graduating in the year 1970. As a young man Dan participated in many sports, such as Football and Tennis, but it was at an early age that he discovered surfing, which became one of his lifelong passions. He went on to attend the University of California, San Diego studying for a bachelor of the Arts Degree in Communication. He then began a long and promising career in the News Media with KCST San Diego, the local affiliate of NBC, as a video cameraman. Receiving several Industry awards, including multiple Emmy’s, Dan advanced to Director of News Services. Later on in his career he became a freelance soundman, cameraman, and producer. In 1972 he met Medina Sabine and they were wed on August 31, 1974 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in San Diego. They went on to have four sons; Michael, David, Paul, and Andrew. He is also survived by his grandsons, Ryan, Cruz, Nico, daughter in law Stacey, and sisters Diane, Gloria, and Elba. Dan’s favorite interests and joys included spending time with family and friends, surfing, music, good food, reading, travel, and new experiences. He battled Leukemia for over a year and applied his signature optimistic attitude, combined with strength and courage every step of the way. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 17, 2010 at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA.
