Grandpa Dave-Thank you so much for the unforgettable memories I will have of our time together. You were quiet but when you spoke your words had meaning. I always felt safe in your presence. You welcomed my children and I into your home and into your family. I will always be thankful. I will miss being able to bring you your favorite meal from KFC and making sure you are taken care of. I truly enjoyed being able to do that for you and being with you during that time. Your legacy is amazing and your life will never be forgotten. Thank you for your love and kindness.

Dad,
    I miss calling you each morning after work hearing your voice asking each other about our morning, how your coffee was,  what's the weather, and you always asking about Matt and Michael,  we would just talk about anything sometimes short calls sometimes long calls, But what I miss the most about our conversation was just before we would hang up you would say:
 "THANKS FOR CALLING" and then with I LOVE YOU...
I would always say back I LOVE YOU TOO DAD!! have a great day dad......  
you would say BYE BYE..... each and every phone call.

I remember you saying those exact words to me even when I was younger and you lived in Monrovia. I will cherish those words for the rest of my life.

I miss you so very much, You are the best dad and grandpa ever!!

My favorite memories of grandpa was when he would pick me up from elementary school in the Cadillac. I remember all the country songs we heard on the radio, they still remind me of him when I hear them. 

Another memory of my grandpa was when he was mad at Me, Daniel, & Diego for putting soap in the pool. We got in SO much trouble. One of life's little lessons I'll never forget. It sure wasn't funny then but we all laughed about it years later. Grandpa forgave me, because that's who he was. A kind person. 

I loved it when he would bring home Krispy Kreme donuts in the morning. A big box of glazed and cinnamon rolls. I'll always remember seeing him with the donut box on top of his walker and a huge smile on his face saying "I got donuts!" He was so happy and so was I! We loved it when he would bring us donuts. 

I love you grandpa & I’ll miss you.

Some of my favorite memories of Grandpa,:

One time when Daniel, Diego, Cambria, & I were swimming in the pool we heard the ice cream truck. We went and asked grandpa for money & then went to the front yard. He had only given us $5 for all 4 of us, which was not enough. So when we didn’t have enough we went back inside & asked him for more money. Grandpa's response before he gave us more money was “What are you buying?! The whole damn truck?!” 

It was always funny how grandpa would push Millie out of his way with his walker. She was always in the way because she's such a huge dog. He'd say "Go on now Millie, go on" and tap her with his walker. They were so funny together. 

The sweetest memory was when me and Cambria would spend the night at grandma and grandpa's, and in the morning when we were still sleeping, grandpa would go on his computer and leave the light off for us to sleep. He was so considerate of others and his small sacrifices showed what kind of character he had. 

He was such a loving grandpa to all his grandkids.

Eulogy, Little Chapel of the Roses, Bonita, California

As most of you all know, my dad was a simple man, a very humble man, and most of the time a man of very few words. But over the last year I learned quite a bit about my dad, and about his character, as I watched him recover from a tremendous fall and a very lengthy hospital and skilled nursing stay. His determination and will and strength to come back from his injury and long recovery was nothing short of a miracle. But that’s really who he always was. Strong willed and determined, with the strength of a true fighter.
My dad had a great amount of respect for me, and I can certainly say the same for him. I was his voice when he didn’t have one and stood by him step by step though his recovery last year. I was honored to manage his health care and be his nurse over the years and I cherish the time it afforded us to be able to share each other’s company. We’d listen to our favorite county station on the radio and just chat away when we were in the car on the way to his appointments. Or we’d just sit quietly next to each other and watch TV together while he was in the hospital or the nursing facility. He taught me not every moment has to be filled with talking and a conversations. Often it can be the quite times, the quiet moments, that reveal themselves as some of the treasured life lessons. But of course, no matter where we were or what we were doing, he always had a joke or a funny story to share. 
I actually got my dad to go out to lunch one day after one of his doctor appointments. But just once. We sure stopped for more donuts than lunch. Maple bars, apple fritters, or an occasional jelly filled or glazed. 
But even better than a lunch, I got to take a trip to Massachusetts with my dad, just him and I. We went in the fall of 2001 to honor the life of his sister Kathy. He took me all around the town he grew up in, we visited family and distant relatives I had never met and my dad hadn’t seen in years. He drove me by the bus stops he waited at, and on the winter days he told me how his hair froze from the cold wet air. We went by is high school, and of  course is had changed so much he said. We even brought live lobsters and clams home on the plane and cooked them up for dinner when we came home. It was a really special trip that I have always held near and dear to my heart, but even more so now.
To say I loved my dad would be an understatement - and to say I’m going to miss him would be an even greater understatement.
My dad was kind, and giving and loving. He lived simplistically and always within his means. He was the Patriarch through and through. He provided for his family, always. He always thanked me, for everything I did for him. Never once did he make me feel anything but valued, appreciated and loved.
My Dad's most well know trait was his personality. He was quick witted and a real jokester. He was always willing to play a practical joke on you, especially when you least expected it. He took much joy in sneaking up on you and doing the “comb behind the ear” trick. And he especially enjoyed hiding his plastic snake where you least expected to find it. He loved offering you lotion from his “string in the lotion bottle” or shaking your hand with the zapper hidden behind his finger. His Jock's room coworkers fondly recall my dad often filling their hats and shoes with shaving cream without their knowledge. He was always up to something. His laughter after he “got you” with one of his pranks was well worth whatever antics he was up to. His face really lit up when he pulled it off.   
My dad was a hard worker, with an extremely dedicated work ethic. He never complained, ever. For years, every morning he rose before the sun and went to work at the racetrack he loved so dearly. He was Mr. Fix It. He could fix anything. I mean anything. He played cards and cribbage like no one’s business. Rummy was one of his favorites, horse race rummy to be exact. He was a great bowler too and bowled on my leagues.
David Earle Rushlow was born September 17, 1936 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was the 4th of 5 children born to Theresa and Philip Rushlow. He grew up in Massachusetts and worshiped at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He went to St. Mary’s Grammar School from the 1st to 8th grade. He graduated from North Attleboro high school in 1954.
During high school my dad played baseball and basketball. He was a great baseball player but the scouts had their eyes on recruiting him for another career, a jockey. He was recruited while still in high school and began to build his career in the horse racing industry. My dad began riding horses at the young age of 16. He won his first race at Scarborough Downs racetrack in Maine. He was 19 years old. 
One of the most memorable moments I have with my dad was when I witnessed him break in a horse when I was about 9 or 10 years old. It was such an incredible experience to witness my dad doing what he enjoyed and doing it with such love and grace. To see him interact with horses was truly to be in the presence of greatness. He was so incredibly gifted. And the horses loved him. He was a horse whisperer like no other.
 David and Twyla were married on September 29, 1957 at St. Mary’s church in Franklin, Massachusetts. They traveled across the United States right after they were married where they settled in many states where my dad rode; Lisa was born in New Mexico, Terri was born Texas, and finally settling in California where Kim and I were born. We lived in a few cities like Bonita and Spring Valley in the earlier years and finally settling in Chula Vista. We always lived in close proximity to border of Mexico where my dad rode in Tijuana at the Agua Caliente racetrack until it burned down in 1971. After the fire, he returned to racing for a short time in the United States; in California he rode at Del Mar and Hollywood Park and in Arizona he rode at Rillito Park. He finished his racing career in 1973. He became an assistant trainer for MG Williams right after his retirement from racing. While an assistant trainer, he continued to take mounts during morning workouts for many, many years even after he changed careers to become valet in 1980. He was a highly sought after valet and was once quoted as saying he had “the classiest corner in the jocks room” with jockeys like Eddie Delahoussaye, Chris McCarron, Jack Kanele, Danny Sorenson, and Fernando Valenzuela. My dad retired from the racetrack the second time in 2000.
I feel so fortunate to have bought a home and only a few houses from my parents and my childhood home. My two girls, Madeira and Cambria, were always at grandma and grandpa’s house. They’d walk up the hill to go swim in their pool, eat dinner, spend the night, or just hang out with their grandparents and eat donuts or watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. My parents also watched my girls when they were babies while I worked and Kurt was taking classes at San Diego State. Both of the girls have fond memories of both of their grandparents, for which I feel truly blessed. My dad was always happy to see all of us when we came over and he greeted us with a smile. And even in his walker, he still managed to walk me to the door every time I visited.
The legacies my dad left to me that I proudly inherited and will carry forward were his strong work ethic, doing things the right way the 1st time, his ability to fix just about anything, which goes hand and hand with his mechanical and methodical way of thinking that I also inherited, and his incredible story telling skills. 
My parents were been married for 62 years. My dad is survived their 4 daughters, Lisa, Terri, Kim and Dyan; 2 sons-in-law, Bobby and Kurt, 8 grandchildren; Twyla, Erik, Matthew, Michael, Andi, Daniel, Madeira and Cambria, and one great grandchild; Diego.
You made it to winner’s circle in heaven on your final ride. What a race you rode Dad, what an incredible ride, what a victory. A life well lived. 

I will always carry the memories of you in my heart.

Time Spent With You

When I first met you,
You welcomed me with a joke

This broke the ice, 
Judgment none, you were nice. 

Just friendship and respect, 
A relationship I didn't want to neglect.

You became a new father-in-law, 
One of the happiest days of them all

You became a new grandpa twice, 
The other happiest days of my life. 

We watched football and yelled, 
It is true, the Chargers smelled

You whispered jokes I can't repeat, 
I giggled quietly and extra discrete

Your laughter was subdued,
So you and I chuckled without being rude

We cut the grass and what a job,
My skills not so great, it doesn't matter, you gave me the nod

I don't know what I did wrong, even to this day
You simply said "Kurt, I’ll take this job the rest of the way"!

I hoped that would be the only way that I'd ever let you down

I tried to redeem myself as much as I could,
By helping you out with small jobs I would

Things like recycling cans, cleaning the pool filter 
And setting up the water pumps for the rain

What I would give right now to be needed by you once again

Saw you in your element, at the old timer’s events
Stood in awe as I watched you, tell old stories and some new

All you guys were together again
We won't soon forget images of you men

Great times and memories of holiday meals
Will live with us forever, this means a great deal

Your 80th was a once in a lifetime party
Your family and friends made it extra hearty

Dogs were a big part of your world,
There’s no doubt Farrah is with you now

Family love was at your core,
From you I'd like to learn more

Posted on Santa Anita Stable Notes: Sorry to report that longtime Southern California-based Jockeys’ Room valet and exercise rider, David Rushlow, passed away early Sunday morning as a result of fall at his home in Chula Vista on Saturday.  A former jockey, Rushlow was born on Sept. 17, 1936 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts and he broke his maiden at age 19 at Scarborough Downs, in Maine.  Rushlow would ride throughout New England and North America, including at Agua Caliente, south of San Diego.  A beloved Jocks’ Room prankster, Rushlow was an everyday regular at any Race Horse Rummy game, which often included the likes of Bill Shoemaker, Eddie Delahoussaye, Ray Sibille, Fernando Toro and others.  Highly sought after as a valet, he worked for many riders over the years, including Delahoussaye, Chris McCarron and Pat Valenzuela. David Rushlow is survived by his wife Twyla, their four daughters, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
