Elnora was born the third child of four children, two boys and two girls, to Reymundo and Emilia Bartolome Mariano in 1931. In 1949 she married Rustico Rasing, a Philippine Navy Sailor stationed in Cavite City, and gave birth to three children, two boys and a girl – Romeo, Reymundo , and Reinita. While Rustico was working in Vietnam, Elnora juggled the responsibility of raising her children, opening and running a successful gift shop, purchasing a primary home, and also purchasing and managing a rental duplex. She placed a high priority on ensuring her children’s education since she had not been able to complete her own because of the death of her father and she recognized that an education was key to ensuring a successful future.
After her son Romeo joined the U.S. Navy, he sponsored her to join him in the U.S. as a permanent resident. Elnora first resided in Washington D.C. and then traveled to Hawaii to stay with her daughter, Reinita, who had recently emigrated to the United States. She played a very important role in raising Reinita’s children in Hawaii and when Reinita later moved to Italy she joined the family. When Reinita’s husband passed away, Elnora took the responsibility of assisting in raising her grandchildren, imparting values of thrift and temperament that have ensured their success.
Due to ongoing illness Elnora suffered from renal failure in 2003 which required she undergo dialysis three times a week. Her doctors offered no hope beyond three or four years but she, being meticulous and careful, managed to beat those odds by a factor of two. Until her passing she always took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren who had quite literally spread around the world. She loved unconditionally and was loved in kind by all who knew her. Her quiet strength of will and purpose are an inspiration. She is missed greatly but will always be remembered fondly.
