

Born in Lyon County, Kansas on February 11, 1929 in the Flint Hills of Eastern Kansas. The third child of nine of Paul and Edna Richard he lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Graduating from Emporia High School in 1947, he immediately enlisted in the United States Navy and was shipped west to bootcamp at NTC in San Diego. This marked the beginning of long and successful career which lasted for twenty-seven years and included duty stations throughout the United States and numerous postings on surface ships. Here retired as a mustang Lieutenant Commander in 1974, having seen shipboard service in both Korea and Vietnam.
In 1956 in San Diego, he met and married Robena M. Smith. They were married 53 years and raised four sons. Following retirement, he attended college and graduated with an accounting degree from SDSU. For the next twenty years he ran his own tax preparation business. In his later years he purchased several parcels of pastureland in the area where grew up and found great satisfaction in running herds of cattle on these properties.
He is survived by his son Stephen Richard and grandsons Stephen and Paul of Chula Vista and great grandchildren Jacob and Alethia; son Kenneth Richard and grandson John Richard of Sacramento, granddaughter Jessica Richard of Arcata, and grandson Jason of Blue Lake; son Glenn Richard of Bonita. He was predeceased by his wife Robena M. Richard and son David Richard.
Services will be held at Glen Abbey Cemetery on July 19th, with a viewing at 1:00pm, graveside ceremony at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Chula Vista Presbyterian Church.
