March 17, 1937 – September 14, 2010
Genaro (John) was born in Calasiao, Philippines to Jose and Maria Roy Alvarez in 1937. He was the sixth of 9 children, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He began his career with the US Navy and came to the states in 1960. He wed his sweetheart, Candida (Dolly), in the Philippines 1964 and moved his family to the U.S. in 1970. He has worked most of his military career in San Diego, CA but was also stationed in Adak, Alaska 1977 – 1981. He retired from the Navy in April 1983 and retired from his post-military career in the civil service in 1997. Genaro was very active in many Filipino organizations throughout the years because he loved to dance. Especially the cha cha and the tango. Some of the organizations he was a member of included: Calasiao Association of San Diego, Calasiao Association of Southern California, Dagupan City Club, the Pangasinan Association, Fil-Am Club of San Diego County and the South-Bay Fil-Am Senior Citizen Association. In addition to babysitting his grandchildren and his many affiliations, Genaro enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, eating at buffet restaurants, and tending to his fruitful vegetable garden.
Genaro was a quiet and humble man. He was a hard worker and his family can attest that his dedication to work was to sacrifice for their happiness. He lived the American dream, strived hard to provide for his family, which created the success of both of his children earning college degrees. This was Genaro’s goal, to make sure his children succeeded and even implemented this with his grandchildren, already creating saving accounts for them as soon as they were born. Genaro never wanted to take the spotlight, he left that up to his children and wife. But one thing you could always hear him talking about, was his grandchildren. He could go on for hours, telling stories about them and how smart they are.
Genaro passed away peacefully on September 14, 2010 with his wife, two children and good friends at his side. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Candida, two children, Myra and Christopher, their spouses, Dan and Ruby, and four beautiful grandchildren, Christopher (11), Sara (8), Christian(2), and Alyssa(6 mos).
