Genevieve Marie Costello
January 14, 1987 - May 7, 2013
History:
Born in San Diego, Ca. on January 14, 1987, Genevieve began her fulfilling life. Genevieve was the youngest daughter of retired Navy Senior Chief, Paul Costello and his wife Myrna Costello. Paul and Myrna are hard working parents that raised their five daughters in a disciplined, but loving way. It was from here that Genevieve learned much of her strength and confidence.
Genevieve attended Kempton Elementary, La Presa Middle School, and Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, Ca. She graduated from Mount Miguel High School with Honors in 2005 and lettered in several sports such as Basketball, Softball, Golf, and Cross Country. Genevieve was a rare, 5’5” Point Guard, who was a four-time All-East County honoree in Girls Basketball who helped Mount Miguel High to three consecutive CIF San Diego Section championships. The 2003 Girls Basketball team became the first to win a CIF Championship in school history. She was inducted into the Mount Miguel High School Hall of Fame along with the 2003 Girls Basketball team. Genevieve was named MVP of the Girls Golf team and MVP of the Cross Country team. She was also named the school's Outstanding Athlete her senior year.
Genevieve went on to attend UC Davis on a basketball scholarship. She was a stellar performer for four years and the Team Captain her senior year. In her four seasons at UC Davis, the Aggies earned a berth to the Women's NIT in 2008 (losing in the first round to Cal in overtime), with Genevieve a huge component to the school's elevation to NCAA Division I status. Genevieve also led the Aggies in assists in 2006-07, while ranking among the top 3-point shooting percentage leaders in school history. The program grew quickly, eventually winning the 2010-11 Big West Conference championship to earn its first NCAA Tournament berth. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development.
Occupation:
After receiving her formal education, Genevieve became employed by Cali Logistics Services. A Collection Agency located in Oceanside, Ca. Genevieve understood the business very well and was promoted very quickly. When asked to support a new opening in Clearwater, Fl., Genevieve jumped at the opportunity. She lived in Florida with her dog Koa for 1 year and loved every minute of it. The weather was warm and she was so close to the beach. She made lasting relationships with her co-workers. They were her family away from home. However, she missed her real family tremendously and decided to move back to San Diego.
Back in San Diego, her good friend Kayla helped her to get a job at Road Runner Sports retail store. Although Genevieve only worked there for a short period, she already won the hearts of her co-workers and managers. Genevieve also received the highest number of sales and was awarded the Company BMW car as a loaner for the week. She was very proud of this car and drove it everywhere.
Family and Friends:
Even though Genevieve worked hard, she never forgot about her friends and family. Genevieve has 4 sisters: Minerva, Jennifer, Maria, and Rose. She is the aunt of eight nieces and nephews: Jeffrey, Liana, Alexis, Markell Jr., Michael, Madison, Jordan, and Andrew. However, her pride and joy is her Blue-nosed Pit Bull, Koa. She had raised him since he was a puppy and they were inseparable. Her dog has the same fun-loving spirit as Genevieve did. During warm nights, Genevieve and I used to take our dogs for long walks through the empty fields and watch our dogs play and jump through the tall grass. We would talk about the family and different ideas of what she wanted out of life.
Genevieve always made it a point to be there for her friends whenever they needed her. She was a good friend to have. Every person Genevieve came into contact with, she left a lasting impression. You could always count on Gen to make you laugh. Her positivity and enthusiasm was infectious.
Hobbies and Interests:
When Gen wanted to pursue something new, she did it. She was fearless and full of life. Whether it is skydiving, cliff diving, riding motorcycles, or getting tattoos, Gen went after it head on and with no regrets. Gen was adventurous and a thrill seeker, “You Only Live Once” was her motto. Gen also had a “Take it all In” type of approach. She loved to go hiking with her dog. We would go together and hike up Kowles Mountain with our dogs and enjoy the scenery once we were at the top. We’d take many pictures and capture the beauty of San Diego. She also loved to go to the beach. She and I would try to learn how to surf and it became addicting for us. We both love the ocean and the water. We also took our dogs to Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. We’d point at the different breeds of dogs and try to name them and then watch Koa jump into the waves while my dog sat by my side too scared to go into the water. But most of the time we would sit in the sand, stare at the waves, and talk about how we love the beach, San Diego, and what a nice day it was.
Regards:
Genevieve passed at the tender age of 26 on May 7, 2013.
