Born in Chula Vista, he graduated from Sweetwater High School and attended San Diego State College. He worked for Rohr Aircraft and served in the Army Medical Corps during WW II. In 1950, he married Jane, his wife of 57 years. Ernie worked as a building contractor, and for the county assessor. He was president of the Sweetwater Valley Civic Association and advised on land use issues. An avid sportsman, he hunted and fished well into his seventies.
His wife Jane preceded him. Survivors include his son H. Ernest II of San Diego, daughter Nona LeBlanc of Baton Rouge, La., four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
