James Andrew Barrows was born in Michigan. Moved to California when he was young because of health issues. He lived on Kansas Street in San Diego during his teens. He and his brothers Robert and George would spend a lot of time fishing and playing in the San Diego River that ran through Mission Valley. During his High School years he sang lead tenor in the choir. Later he sang with a Barber Shop Quartet. He also enjoyed singing with the family around the piano.
He was called to the Navy January 10, 1944. He was in the Ship Repair Unit and spent some time in the Philippines. The date of separation from the Navy was April 2, 1946.
James met and married Mary Dibble on June 12, 1955, he lost her at an early age due to illness.
He worked for Humphrey Inc. for fifty years before retiring as a machinist. He loved his job and the people he worked with.
During this time he met and married Doris Paddeck. They enjoyed camping in their motor home and did a little fishing. Doris passed January 7, 2000.
James was always a "fixit" person. If something didn't work he would take it apart and try to fix it. Most of the time he would accomplish his goal.
He enjoyed visiting his friends until it became too difficult for him to drive more than a few miles from his home, his friends then would drop by to see him.
His two brothers preceded him in death.
James was ninety three last July. He had a good life.
He will be missed.
