

John was born in Denver Colorado to Kenneth O. Avery Jr. and Suzanne H. Burnham on Thanksgiving day. Survived by wife Lina, sister Judy, Nephew, Nieces and grandchildren.
He attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver. After graduating High School at age 17 he enlisted in the Airforce and served in the Vietnam war between ’71 and ’72 for one tour. While in Vietnam, he was in contact with Agent Orange which led to Pulmonary Fibrosis diagnosed 11 years ago.
He then went to school to be a court reporter at the Avery Court Reporting Academy owned by his father. Became an official reporter in Colorado and California. Served in San Diego County as an official court reporter for 36 years, 7 years as a supervisor at South Bay. While working full time, he pursued a college degree with the University of Phoenix and received a Bachelors in Business Administration in 2000.
His favorite hobbies are volunteering, target shooting and flying. He
volunteered in Civil Air Patrol Search and Rescue, auxiliary Coast
Guard patrolling San Diego Bay and as a Senior Volunteer Sheriff
Department in Imperial Beach where he retired. While working at the Downtown Courthouse he would volunteer his time after work to assist Law Enforcement Officers with delivering statements when appearing in court.
In lieu of flowers/gifts John asks anyone who is willing and able to
donate their time or money to St. Michael’s Catholic Church Capital
Campaign as a way to honor him.
John will be cremated at Glen Abbey. Visitation will be held on
February 6, 2026 from 5 PM through 9 PM at Chapel of the Roses.
Funeral Service will be held on February 7, 2026 at St. Michael’s
Catholic Church at 10 AM.
