John L Greife

June 10, 1935 - January 1, 2023

Colonel (USA Ret) John L. Greife was born in San Diego and raised in Chula Vista and Sunnyside, CA. He went to college at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Geology, and a master’s degree in Paleontology. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and served as an Intelligence Officer. He retired in 1989 as Commander, US Army Field Support Center, Intelligence and Security Command, at Fort Meade, MD. John was a member of the Chula Vista Masonic Lodge 626 for 61 years. He was raised to Master Mason on February 28, 1961.

After retirement from the Army, John and his family returned to Bonita and he was an active member in the South Bay community. He worked in the Scripps Hospital System developing disaster plans after 9/11 and he supported a variety of community organizations. When he stopped working, he spent his new found free time traveling the world with his wife and friends, playing cards, and watching the Padres play live with his sister. He is survived by his wife, Nora, and two daughters, Catherine and Heather.

Graveside services will be at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita on January 26, 2023 at 1:30pm. No reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to the Army Emergency Relief (AER) Fund (give.armyemergencyrelief.org).
