Leopoldo "Boy" Angeles De Joya, a devoted father, grandfather, and proud U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in San Diego, California, at the age of 80. His death came nine days after suffering a stroke.
Born on November 17, 1944, in Maragondon, Cavite, Philippines, Leopoldo was a man of quiet strength and profound dedication. After graduating from high school, he made the selfless decision to join the U.S. Navy as a young man. This pivotal sacrifice allowed him to forge a new life for his loved ones in America. He proudly served his country for 20 years, retiring as a Petty Officer, 1st Class.
Leopoldo’s greatest legacy is his family. His military career allowed him to petition his mother, three siblings, his beloved wife, his mother-in-law, and three in-laws to immigrate to the United States. He was the anchor of his extended family, ensuring opportunities for all.
He continued his life of dedicated work, officially retiring a second time in 2000 after years in Civil Service. In 1990, he helped his wife realize her dream of opening Filipino Desserts Plus. He co-owned the shop until 2005, when his eldest daughter took over. Thanks to his foundational support, the business remains open and thriving 35 years later.
"Boy" was a long-time resident of San Diego, where he enjoyed a peaceful retirement. He had a simple love for classic action movies and Westerns, particularly those starring Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stallone. He also maintained a nostalgic fondness for the classic TV comedies Three's Company and Tom and Jerry.
Leopoldo faced his later years with resilience. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in his mid-60s, he went to live with his daughters after the passing of his wife in 2012. While his short-term memory declined, he could vividly recall old events and people from his past. In recent years, as the dementia progressed, he became more of a playful jokester, finding a joyous "second childhood" that brought laughter and warmth to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of forty-one years, Agnes Manansala De Joya (d. 2012), and his parents, Victorino De Joya and Mauricia Angeles De Joya.
Leopoldo is survived by his two devoted daughters and their husbands: Maybelline Cui (Derrick) and Jannette Velasco (Ryan). He leaves behind six cherished grandchildren who brought him immense joy: L'Oreal Cui-O’Connor (married to Nicole), Miranda Cui (fiancé to Patrick Renner), Ryland Velasco, Ava Cui, Josselyn Velasco, and Jackson Cui. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, 3-year-olds Noa Milani and Nolan Derrick. He is further survived by his siblings: Asuncion “Nene” J. Anglo, Lilia “Baby” De Joya, and Oliver De Joya.
