She lived her junior years with her mother, Odell Byrd, brother, Sam Byrd, and later, brother, Lloyd Hampton, and worked various jobs from warehousing, assembly lines, and many years as a prominent cashier at Macy's. Her most memorable employment was working the food services programs at whatever schools her later children, Jamila Thompson and Jerriell Reeves II, were attending at the time.
She was always proud of the fact that her and her husband, Jerriell Reeves, lived most of their adult lives together. He was a military brat and met her often in grade school when his dad would go to sea with the Navy. His mom would load up the station wagon and visit family, who happened to live in Mary’s hometown.
In 1959, Mary and her future husband were in the same 2nd grade classroom at Marshall Elementary School in Erie, Pennsylvania, with Mrs. Dresner, who was often teased for wearing what classmates called "Red goose shoes."
Finally, they met again in college and were married in Corpus Christi, Texas, on the 17th of July in 1972 for 51 adventurous years, until death departed them.
With her husband in the Navy, she loved traveling back and forth from the East coast to the West coast and even as far as the US Territory of Guam, where their son was born.
In 02-02-02, Mary became a joyous 'nana' to her grandson, Makai Adams, and later to a granddaughter, Dejanae Thompson, by her daughter, Jamila's marriage to Randy Thompson.
Mary Reeves will always be known as one of the most stern defenders of family and friends that anyone could possibly imagine. Whenever and wherever she noticed anyone near her being mistreated or abused, the perpetrator was about to lose a battle. She was stepping in.
Most importantly, Mary was a born-again child of God and graciously loved by many. She will be missed.
