"Minnie Peters Goebel-Dement, sister of Oma Kathleen Peters Hoy, and daughter of Robert Peters and Lily Snow Peters, who donated land at "The Maples" at Dunvegan, Alberta, Canada, to the Anglican church, has passed away at the age of 94 years. She and Harvey Howard Goebel, were children of the homesteading Peters and Goebel families on the Peace River, Alberta, near the Dunvegan bridge and "Dunvegan Farms" passed away in Chula Vista, San Diego, California."
Minnie Louise Peters Goebel-Dement, the great great granddaughter of Methodist Reverend John Peters, Dunaghy, Northern Ireland and St. John's, Newfoundland harbour pilot Edward Snow, had her last cup of tea Friday, November 17, 2017. The lifelong Canadian, Anglican/Episcopalian was born to Lily Harriet Snow, St. John's and Robert Peters, Leeds, England bookbinder and World War I wounded and mustard gas sufferer, March 13, 1923 on the frontier at the Fort Dunvegan, Alberta, Canada Hudson Bay Factor House. Her parents had met at a Temperance Society meeting in British Columbia. To go to school she boarded with friends in Vanrena and Fairview, Alberta and rode horseback to rejoin her parents on weekends.
Minnie married local neighbor, U.S. Navy Harvey Howard Goebel, May 7, 1946, and took the drastic step of leaving all she knew to head south to the United States to be befriended by Harvey's aunt, (Carrie) Leona Goebel Daugherty. Minnie made homes for her family in Alaska, Italy, Montana, Washington, Boston, Norfolk, and finally in San Diego, California. Daughters Heather Louise Goebel (wife of Dennis MacLeod) and Rominey Ann Goebel (John Jacobs) were born.
An active member of church women's groups and a champion crafter, she spent hours tatting, quilling, embroidering, crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting and sequin sewing lovely items for church bazaars besides making her daughters' clothes.
After the death of Harvey, she later married U.S. Navy (Ira) Benjamin Dement, the most generous and kind of stepfathers who took her traveling until his death.
Our mother and grandmother was the epitome of nurturing, kindness and conscientiousness as so many friends relayed to us recently. She was independent, and quite fierce in her sense of responsibility.
She was predeceased by husbands Harvey and Ben, her only sibling, beloved Oma Kathleen Peters Hoy, nephew Douglas Hoy, cousin Lilla Snow Barron, and a heart wrenching number of dear friends.
Mourning are her daughters, her grandchildren Whitney Kathleen (Douglas Sitter) and Luke Harvey Jacobs, great grandson, Dominic John Sitter, nephew (Robert) Stephen Hoy, niece Ellen Hoy Robb of Edmonton, Alberta; cousins Barbara Peddle (Rolly) and Bernice Snow Verbree (Jon), stepfamily Martha Dement Greenstone, Robert Dement, Katie Greenstone Billet,John Greenstone, dear friends Linda and Paul Palmer, Wilma Hunter and all the loving congregation members of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Now in heaven she is enjoying horseback riding, dancing, fishing, bowling, watching the Padres, tending her dachshunds, feeding the birds, enjoying piano sing-alongs, having sewn her last earthly church bazaar sequin but still nurturing all near her, including the little domestic rabbit, Bun Bun, whom she rescued and spoiled when it hopped into her backyard.
In lieu of any floral remembrances, every thoughtful of others, Mother would appreciate donations to your choice of charity. She herself was especially fond of the Disabled Veterans of America, PBS and the Salvation Army.
Minnie was interred with her first husband, Harvey Howard Goebel, at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita, San Diego county, California."
