

Paulino “Paul” Caparas Caunin, MAC , USN (Ret) passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Friendship Manor Skilled Nursing Facility in National City.
Paul was born in Banay-Banay, Cabuyao Laguna, Philippines to Alfredo Caunin and Josefa Caunin. He graduated high school in 1957 from St. John Academy. He finished his Associate in Commercial Science Degree from Laguna Institute in Calamba, Laguna Philippines in 1959.
On June 21, 1970, he married former Lucila Asido Paelmo in Los Banos, Laguna Philippines. He joined the US Navy and was honorably discharched in 1988. He receive many recognitions. He received Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd), Good Conduct award (84 Dec. 22), Sharp Shooter .38 caliber pistol, Navy E ribbon, Sea Service Deployment ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces MUC (Gallantry Cross), National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign medal. After retiring from the Navy, he became a Correctional Officer at Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, CA.
He continued to further his education in Chaminade University of Honolulu in 1988 with a degree of General Studies. In 1994, he acquired an Associate in Science Automotive Technology from Southwestern College.
He loved to play golf on the weekends. He was a pet lover. He had a dog named Sam, and a cat named Trina. The pets helped him cope with cancer. He was entertained by politics, a patriot at heart.
Paulino is survived by two children, Indira Caunin and Benigno Caunin, adopted son, and wife Lucila Caunin.
