Rey, as he was affectionately known, was born on February 4, 1938, in Iloilo, Philippines. His journey began with dreams bigger than himself. In 1956, he joined the United States Navy in pursuit of a new life abroad. Before leaving, he promised his beloved, Linda Rico, that he would return for her. True to his word, he did, and their love story continued. In 1967 they married. Together, they traveled the world as Rey served faithfully in the Navy.
During his 22-year naval career, Rey worked as a cook and in various other capacities, ultimately achieving the rank of E7, Chief Petty Officer. For his dedicated service, he was awarded numerous decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Antarctic Service Medal and more. Among his notable duty stations were Louisiana—where his first son, Ron “Butch” Rico Diestro, was born in 1978—and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—where his second son, Brian Rico Diestro, was born in 1979. In 1980, he retired from the Navy in San Diego, California.
Following his military retirement, Rey transitioned into civilian life, beginning a career in insurance with Surety Life where he was appointed the first Regional Manager of his service area. Later he established himself in real estate and ultimately founded his own offices, Sunrise Homes and Crown Realty.
Rey enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He was an avid fisherman and accomplished his dream of catching a sailfish on a family trip to Acapulco. He had that fish mounted and hung it proudly in his offices and later his home. He was a lifelong boxing fan, he also enjoyed cheering on the Lakers, Padres, and Chargers. He had a green thumb and grew many trees, plants and vegetables. He had a love of old western films and music from the 1950s and 1960s. He took pride in serving his parish community at St. Michael’s Parish as a lector, and member of the Cursillo movement.
Rey was married to Linda Rico Diestro until her passing in 1999. In 2002, he found lasting companionship again, marrying Maria Linda Patag, and together they made their home in Beaumont, Texas. For over two decades, they shared a loving life, often traveling as Maria Linda pursued her continuing medical education in locations around the world. They enjoyed cruises and the companionship of friends and family. In retirement, Rey loved his bowling leagues, fished the Gulf of Mexico and played poker often with friends and at local casinos.
Rey found his greatest joy in his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Bryson, Camryn Linda, and Dylan Rose, and delighted in supporting their activities—from Polynesian dancing to sports like gymnastics, soccer, and volleyball. He cherished cooking for and with them, sharing family recipes.
Rey was known for his sharp wit and joyful spirit. Ever charismatic, he playfully asserted he passed on the “Diestro Charm” to his sons. He will be remembered as fiercely dedicated, stubborn, strong-willed and hardworking. He dedicated his life to the Navy, to providing for his family, and to building the life he had once dreamed of when he left the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Linda; his son, Brian Rico Diestro (Elaine); his grandchildren, Bryson, Camryn, and Dylan Rose; and many extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Rico Diestro, and his son, Ron “Butch” Rico Diestro (2019).
