Rolando S. Quijano

Rolando was born June 4, 1940, in Cavite City, Philippines, the son of the late Isidro and Leonarda Quijano. He was the fifth of seven children. He graduated from Cavite High School in 1959 and began his U.S. Navy career in 1964. In 1968, Rolando married Remedios Morales. He moved his family to Okinawa, Japan in 1971 and then to San Diego, California in 1975 where he would permanently make his home. He retired from the US Navy after 20 years of service. After his discharge, he was employed by the Coronado Hospital serving as a dietary specialist for over 20 years, finally retiring from the work force in 2005.

Rolando had a love for birds, caring for various species that included canaries, love birds, myna birds, and chickens to name a few. He also had a love for classic cars especially corvettes and mustangs. His most recent hobby was collecting watches of all colors and sizes. Though he had a sizeable collection Rolando often gave what he purchased to family just to see the joy and happiness it brought when presented with a watch he specially purchased for them.

His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved wife and grandchildren. Rolando and Remy would often visit the Philippines every couple of years to visit their homeland and to spend time with family in the Philippines. Rolando was also a doting tatay granting his grandchildren their “sweets” desire. He loved playing catch with his grandson and having tea parties with his granddaughters.

Rolando was a kind, generous, and quiet man whose sense of humor, though unfamiliar to many, kept the family amused. He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.

Rolando is survived by his wife, Remedios; children, Erlinda, Richard, and Dennis; daughters-in-law, Teresa and Rowena; 4 grandchildren, Liana, Peyton, Lauren, and Zachary; brothers Ricardo and Rodolfo; and sisters Mercidita, Zenaida, and Estelita.

Rolando was preceded in death by his sister Almeda.

A service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Glen Abbey in Bonita, California.
