Smedley Brown and William Roundhill Brown, a pastor from Leeds, England.
Ruth was 92 years old when she [died] quietly passed away on December 20,
2020.
After living in the North Park area of San Diego for approximately 65 years, she
and her husband, Robert Everett Hanson, moved to Silvergate Retirement
Residence, in San Marcos, three years ago,. She continued to live there after his
death in June 2019. In North Park, they raised their 3 children, Lynn (now Lynn
Hanson-Gutcheck), Bill (William Robert Hanson, now deceased) and Mike
(James Michael Hanson).
As a very creative person who graduated from San Diego State University with a
BA in Art, Ruth’s artistic related activities included drawing, mosaics, stained
glass, and wood carving. She spent a number of years completely restoring a
Model A Ford, including the upholstery, the engine and the paint job complete
with perfect pen striping. She laid a brick driveway and a fire pit in their back yard
that had mosaic birds on the top and a floor in the patio that had mosaic fish
swimming downstream. She restored several flintlock rifles. She refinished
furniture and learned to do hand caning on chair bottoms. She did not fit into the
perfect 50’s housewife mold. She was ahead of her time and marched to her own
drum beat.
Ruth was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for many years, and was active in the
PTA. She also spent countless hours doing art work for Brooklyn Heights
Presbyterian Church.
Known by everyone for her sweet smile and her kindness towards animals and
humans, her heart was genuine. She was the real deal. Ruth was a loving wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We will all miss her!
Ruth is survived by 6 grandchildren (Katrina Joy Sutherland, Heather Michaeleen
McDermott, Erik Hanson Scott, Kelsey Elizabeth Hanson, Colby Tyler Hanson
and Kyra Michaela Hanson) and 4 great-grandchildren (Cameron McCarthy
Sutherland, Callum Bierce Sutherland, Finnegan Wolf McDermott and Harly
Michael McDermott).
Ruth’s burial will be held Tuesday, January 5, 11:00 at Glen Abby
