Selma (aka Sue) was born in North Dakota and passed away on June 6, 2015 in Chula Vista, California. She was the youngest of 6 siblings, four brothers, Paul, Reinhold, Otto and Bernhard and one sister, Olga, all of whom predeceased her. She eventually settled in Washington, DC where she was employed by the Veteran’s Administration and where she met her husband, Elmer Harris, who preceded her in death by 19 years. Selma later was employed by the International World Bank and held the position of Disbursements Officer until she retired after more than 20 years’ service. Upon retirement, she and Elmer moved to Bonita, CA where they remained until their deaths.
Selma was a very caring and most generous person in every way. She was disciplined and usually successful in her undertakings. Her varied interests included knitting, gardening, political interests, computer games, exercise and diet, financial interests, reading, and caring for her dog. She loved watching the sunset over the beautiful flowers in her picture perfect backyard gardens where she enjoyed the beauty, quietness and peace of nature.
As a community minded volunteer, she served as Treasurer for The Friends of the Chula Vista Library and as an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistant where she made many close friends. These friends and her neighbors from Bonita meant very much to Selma.
Selma is survived by sister’s-in-law Corrine Tavenner (George) and Susan Harris, 5 nieces (Dodie Solders, Gloria Salmans, Sharon Strand, Karen O’Connor and Donna Harris), 8 nephews (Michael Krueger, Paul Krueger Jr., Kenneth Krueger, Arnold Krueger, Raymond Tavenner, Gregory Harris and Philip Harris), and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Chula Vista Library, P.O. Box 393, Chula Vista, CA 91912 or the SPCA.
