Steven T. Ray, age 60, faithful husband of 27 years to Kelly, proud father to his beloved daughter Mallory and his 4 cherished sons Taylor, Collin, Jacob and Mike and adoring Papa to his treasured granddaughters Stevie and Shane.
Steve was born on September 15, 1961 to Richard and Nancy Ray, the second of three rambunctious boys Rick, Steve and Ty and brother to big sister Brigette. Born and raised in sunny San Diego he fell in love with the game of baseball and followed his passion all the way to the east coast when he was drafted by the Mets and then the NY Yankees. Although his big league dreams were cut short by injury his love for the game never faded, playing countless weekends of competitive softball and sharing all his knowledge and talent coaching up his boys throughout his adult years.
In 1992 Steve joined the family of Shea Homes where he dedicated his professional career to building high quality homes and loyal relationships that would last a lifetime. Over his 28 years with Shea Homes he went from Customer Service Agent to Vice President of Construction, a testament to his tireless work ethic and love of what he did and who he did it with.
Although Steve relished his work, he always found plenty of time for his family, friends and fun. His first and greatest passion was his kids. If he wasn’t coaching he could be found pacing the sidelines, keeping meticulous mental record of every play and how to help them be their absolute best. He spent his summers boating, wakeboarding and mountain bike riding, and the winter months camping and motorcycle riding the desert trails. Steve was a man of action and constant activity, nothing was beyond his ability to fix or build and he passed down a legacy of self sufficiency, confidence, respect and honor to all of his children.
Steve was a man of great strength but even greater faith. His love of God and people took him to the orphanages of India, the streets of Costa Rica and Wednesday night youth group at his church, but his most treasured ministry was sitting one on one, face to face discussing all aspects of his faith with all those lucky enough to cross his path. Steve never shied away from the hard questions and reveled the opportunity to constantly learn, grow and lead.
Steve was a beloved son, adored brother, a protective and loving husband, dedicated father, cherished Papa and a loyal friend. He was a man of great integrity, extreme generosity and intense compassion. He made all those around him better and he will be greatly missed.
Steve went home to be with Jesus on February 7, 2022
