Thelma was taught the values of faith and education by her parents early in life. She confessed her faith in God at a young age and lived with faith to the full. Thelma and her sister, the late Juan Nell Evans, were best of friends.
Because their parents did not want to separate the girls, Thelma and Juan Nell were enrolled in the same classroom at Lone Oak Grade School. They attended Edwards High School in Gonzales, Texas.
In 1956 while visiting San Diego, Thelma was spotted by Bobby Mack Hughes as she walked along Imperial Avenue with her sister. Bobby said their meeting was “love at first sight.” The two were married December 15, 1956.
Thelma always called him “Robert” because she insisted it was the name he gave her when they were introduced. Bobby said, after 59 years, he decided to own the name she affectionately called him.
Thelma was a kind and gracious person; a devoted wife, loving mother, supportive grandmother and proud great grandmother. She was soft spoken, affectionate and quick to smile. She was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she joined in 1956 under the late Rev. Grandison M. Phelps, Jr.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory: her loving and devoted husband, Bobby Mack “Robert” Hughes; two sons: Hubert Glenn Hughes and Dana Shawn Hughes, both of San Diego; seven grandchildren: Joy “Hughes” Jenkins of Riverside, Michael Hughes of Corona, Chantz Hughes, Robert DeShawn Hughes, Chole Neff, Saiyana Hughes and Ha’leyah Hughes, all of San Diego; five great grandchildren: Deisha Hughes, Jordan Glenn “Hughes” Wilson, Jaelyn “Hughes” Wilson, Sofiah Hughes and Malachi Robert Hughes. Daughter-in-law, Maria Hughes, brother-in-law, Harvey Evans; sister-in-law, Pam Evans; and a multitude of extended family and friends.
