A celebration of Life is scheduled to honor both Daniel, and his father, Maury who passed away in 2022. Please see obituary information for both gentlemen listed below:
Daniel was born December 17, 1979 in Naples, Florida to Maury and Diane Schaps. Also welcoming him were grandparents, MIke and Gladys Alpert and Paul and Shirley Ballbach. Right away, his older brother, Andy, become one of his biggest fans. He would entertain him, take him for rides in his wagon, and became his spokesperson. A year and a half later, brother Jamie was born and now Daniel had someone to help and protect like Andy had helped him. Although there were occasional blow-ups-usually over Nintendo-the three brothers loved and supported each other totally.
As Daniel entered school, he developed more interests. He loved sports, especially baseball. He practiced constantly and was so proud when he made the All-Star Team. From Maury, he developed a fascination with weather. They would plot the tracks of hurricanes and once drove north for more than an hour hoping to catch a rare South Florida snowstorm.
He graduated from Barron Collier High School with High Honors in 1998. He was a class officer and lettered in football and baseball and was a member of the baseball team that won the Florida State Championship in 1997. He went on to graduate cum laude from the University of Miami with a dual major in history and economics. He loved life at Miami where he managed to be vice president of his fraternity, held down a part-time job, and managed a challenging course load. He was accepted at the University of Florida Law School, earned Law Review, and graduated in 2005.
Although he was a practicing attorney, he came to realize what he really enjoyed was tutoring. He helped high school students get through that tough class, and college students with math and economics. He also helped people prepare for the LSAT and Bar Exam. His favorite students, however, were his nephew, Devin, and niece, Lexi - who was known to call at 11 PM to get help from "Uncle Lar."
Dan has lived in the greater Tampa area since 2005. Although he traveled to many places - California, Lake Tahoe, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Ohio to name a few - for a vacation or to visit friends and family, he considered Davis Island his home. He loved the laid-back atmosphere and that you could walk to almost anywhere. He had many good times and many good friends.
In addition to his mother, Diane, he leaves behind his brothers, Andy (Kara) and Nate Schaps; his aunts, Joanie Ballbach, and Andrea (Nathaniel) Singer; a nephew, Devin Schaps, and a niece, Alexis Schaps. He also leaves many friends, some going back to preschool and others scattered around the country.
Maury Schaps passed away peacefully October 31, 2022, at age 79.
He was born in Chicago on July 18, 1943, to Frank “Babe” Schaps and Gladys Schaps. The family moved to Surfside, Florida when Maury was five. He and his sister, Sandra, enjoyed swimming at the beach, fishing in the canals, and playing at the park. As he grew older, he developed a strong interest in the weather-especially hurricanes. He would track them and once chose to stay on Miami Beach with a friend when one was approaching although the rest of the family evacuated.
Maury graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in physical education and taught in the Dade County Schools. It was at one of those schools that he met his wife, Diane. With their three sons, Andy, Daniel, and Nate, they spent many summers RVing around the country. The National Parks and Civil War sites were favorite destinations.
Maury loved sports-especially basketball, football, and baseball. Having spent many summers in Cincinnati with his grandparents, he was a die-hard Reds fan and could name everyone on the teams of the late 50’s and 60’s. But even more than rooting for his favorite teams or playing himself, he loved watching and coaching his sons. The stories shared whenever a group of former players get together are often funny and always positive when they talk about Coach Schaps.
Maury had many friends-a few going back to his childhood on Miami Beach. To some, he was known affectionately as “The Hammer” for his racetrack acumen, which he gladly shared with family and friends. His love of dogs extended to his personal life where he helped raise six rescue dogs. He considered them part of the family.
In more recent times, he looked forward to family get togethers. Holidays were eagerly anticipated but he also enjoyed getting everyone together for the family fantasy football and baseball drafts. Brackets for the NCAA tournament were printed as soon possible for the March Madness contest. It was obvious that Maury just loved his family and his life.
Maury is survived by his wife, Diane, his sons Andy (Kara) Schaps of Naples, Nate Schaps of Naples, two grandchildren, Devin and Alexis, and his sister, Andrea (Nathaniel) Singer of San Diego. He preceded his son, Daniel Schaps of Tampa, who passed away on January 19, 2023.
A celebration of life for both Daniel and Maury will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Hodges Life Celebration Center, 26051 S Tamiami Trail, Bonita Springs, Florida 34134.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.HodgesCelebratesLife.com for the Schaps family.
