In November 2001, Blessed Sacrament Parish initiated a month of prayers for God's blessing on a new pastor, as were informed that our Capuchin Franciscans were to be re-assigned. The following month, we were notified that our new pastor would be Fr. John Bavaro, OFM, as of July 2002. We learned that Fr. John did not immediately accept this assignment, as he needed time to pray over it. Two activities led him to say yes, the Adoration Chapel and our Outreach to the Poor.

For 8 1/2 years, we were blessed to have him at our helm as pastor. In 2003, I had the honor of being named coordinator of the Adoration Chapel. In 2004, the large task of completing the "Unification" of St. Theresa's Church with our parish was accomplished. In 2007, Blessed Sacrament celebrated its 100th anniversary as a parish. Many other things were also done to enable us to become a welcoming parish and toward a deeper union with Our Lord in the Eucharist.

In 2011, due to sickness, Fr. John Bavaro was re-assigned by his Provincial, but he was so happy to know that Fr. John Bucchino, OFM was appointed as our new pastor. Thank you to the Order of Friars Minor who has given us two special Franciscan Priests. May Fr. John Bavaro rest in God's Holy Peace!

After joining Blessed Sacrament when St Patrick Parish closed there were two Father John's, pastor Big John (Bavaro) and Little John (Bucchino) as they were known around the parish and of course Jake. When Big John was re-assigned Little John became our new pastor. We both send our deepest sympathy to Big John's family , he was a one of kind priest, God bless you Big John as we know you are with our Heavenly King this day.

Blessing to your soul. When I became a Secular Franciscan I wanted to go to a parish which I felted accepted. I wrote a letter to Fr. Bavaro and asked permission to join Blessed Sacrament Church, for my Church St. Patrick on Coolidge St. was about to close. He wrote me back and told me since I was a Franciscan I belonged to Blessed Sacrament Church. This was the first time I felt I belonged anywhere. I enjoyed Jake also even when he rose too high to say hello. Thank you Fr. John for all you have done for your little Franciscans. Susan L. Daneault OFS

We at Blessed Sacrament were blessed to have Father John as our pastor. He reinforced our Parish's long-standing commitment to the poor and needy. He was not afraid to share his love of animals with the children in Faith Formation as he would visit classes with Jake. Most importantly, he brought the Gospel and Sacraments to us as an extension of his love of God and God's people.
Father John touched each member of our family supporting us in our joys and trials. He was a great listener. Each one of us are better because of Father John.

Fr.John was so wonderful to hundreds of kids from the South Bronx who came up to Andover for a week of fun at The Winners Camp for most of the 1980’s. Fr.John poured out generosity, fun and love on these boys who now as men have lifelong memories of the Winners Camp. Thank you to Fr.John, Mark, Susan,Tony, Dave and the whole Bavaro family. Fr. John showed us the simplicity, faith and possibility of St. Francis’ gospel path. We hold you in our hearts and prayers today Fr. John from the Bronx, N.Y.

Father John (Jackie),
I’ll always remember you as a very special cousin to my late wife Donna, and a wonderful relative and caring friend to both of us and our children. You were always there for us and the whole Bavaro family. May you Rest In Peace now.

Fr John has left huge footprints on the hearts and lives of so many people. He was a holy man. His gift was bringing the Gospel teachings to life and showing by example how to live our Christian faith. He was compassionate, especially for the poor and homeless, he loved children & animals (especially his Jake), his Franciscan brothers/teachings, his love of all things Italian (oh his cooking) & especially his love of his family made him a mentor to so many & left such an impact-especially on me. He was always so good to me and my family. My heart is sad for knowing I won't have the chance to hear his voice, his sage advice or great stories, but, he is so happy right now and pain free. To his family that he loved so much and was so proud of, we send our heartfelt condolences. Peace, Lisa & Michael
