Lee Joseph Twomey, 80, of Boston and Vero Beach, Florida, died peacefully surrounded by his family, on August 21, 2024, after a brief illness. Lee was the son of the late Leo and Alma Twomey, raised in Malden, where he met the love of his life and future wife of 50 years, Maureen (Burke), who predeceased him. He was a proud alumnus of Malden Catholic and Boston University. Lee built a long and successful career on Wall Street at several firms, including opening the Boston office of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, with longtime business partner and dear friend, Will Davis. Despite his success, Lee never forgot his roots, and lived his life by the Golden Rule. Lee was a generous and loyal friend; he was gregarious, with a great sense of humor, and a lot of fun – loved by kids and dogs, as he was fond of saying! Lee was athletic; he played football and hockey in high school, and learned to ski, play squash and golf in his 20s, and stayed active and fit all his life. Above all else, Lee loved family; Lee and Maureen raised their three children in Lynnfield: Jill Stewart and husband Brad of Wellesley, Christopher Twomey and wife Nicole of Beverly, and Jason Twomey and wife Melissa of Washington, D.C. In later years, Lee and Maureen cherished spending time with their nine grandchildren and could be found watching them compete in rinks, on fields, on baseball diamonds, and performing on stage. Lee also loved playing backgammon and considered himself unbeatable against his family – and usually he was! Lee and Maureen loved to travel, especially with family, and planned many trips to include their children and grandchildren. Most recently Lee celebrated his 80th birthday on a trip with the entire family over the holidays; we are grateful for those memories and will always cherish that time with him. After family, a close second for Lee’s interest was golf; he enjoyed playing with family and friends, was fortunate to have played on many celebrated courses, and was a student of the game throughout his life – lessons, clinics, golf videos and publications were all part of his education. Lee was a longtime member of Salem Country Club, the University Club of Boston, and the John’s Island Club in Vero Beach. Along with his three children, Lee ”Papa” is survived by his adored and adoring grandchildren: Connor, Ben, and Nate Stewart; Annabella, Eliza, and Luke Twomey; Olivia, Hannah, and William Twomey. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Morris. The family is grateful for the dedicated and compassionate care Lee received in the ICU at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. A celebration of Lee’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14th at 11:00 at the Old South Church in Boston, 645 Boylston Street, Boston, reception to follow. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend. The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Lee’s memory to Malden Catholic High School to benefit their scholarship program at maldencatholic.org/give/memorial-gifts
