Ping Fai Choy of Boston passed away peacefully on July 13, 2012 at the age of 103. She is the beloved wife of the late Siu Bin Tang; devoted mother of Fung Ming Tong and her husband Shown K. Lee of Milton, Xue Qing Tang and her husband Gu Sheng Zhou of New York; cherished grandmother of Karen Lee and spouse, Tony Chong, Kit Lee and spouse, Emily Wang, and Kenny Lee; adored great-grandmother of Katie Chong, Emma and Penn Lee; and loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Ping was born in Guangdong province in China. She has always been a hardworking and dedicated professional with a keen business sense at a time when most women in China are homemakers. She attended vocational school and became a midwife. After graduation, she established and managed an obstetrics clinic and delivered numerous babies to this world. She even provided intensive care to sick newborns until they are healthy enough to go home. As a result, she became the Godmother of some of these sick babies at the request of grateful parents.
She came to the United States in 1972 when she was 60 years old. Not knowing the English language did not prevent her from seeking a job to pass the time. She found work in a garment factory and worked well into her 70’s.
Ping was very special to all of us but especially to Karen, Kenny, and Katie. At the young age of 11 months, Karen left China and went to Hong Kong with her. She sacrificed her career as midwife and took care of Karen until about age 5 when Karen’s parents finally were able to leave China and join them in Hong Kong. When Kenny came along in 1964, Ping cared for him too. Ping not only took care of her grandchildren, she also took care of her great-grandchild. When Katie was born in 1986, Ping cared for her while her parents worked. She taught Katie to sing, read, and play Go Fish. Every day she made Katie’s favorite lunch, “白白飯“, which is a mixture of rice, meat, Chinese sausage, and shiitake mushrooms.
Ping’s selflessness and dedication to her family is second to no one. Her family is always her priority, her pride and joy. We are blessed to have this amazing woman as our Mom, PoPo, and BakBak.
