Beatrice Josephine Kallina Peterson, 90, of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts went joyfully to be with her Savior on Sunday evening June 11th at Rosewood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Peabody, Massachusetts. Until recently she had been cared for at home by her family, especially by her devoted daughter and companion and of many years, Julia J. Peterson. Beatrice was born in Canandaigua, NY on September 4, 1926, the youngest of five children born to the Reverend Emanuel J. Kallina and Beatrice Wooding Kallina. She was also the last surviving of their five children.
Beatrice spent her life in service to others, beginning with earning her RN from Bellevue Hospital in 1948. It was there that she met Dr. Norvell L. Peterson, a practicing psychiatrist whom she married on July 30, 1949 in York, Maine. For a number of years during their early marriage, Beatrice worked with Dr. Peterson as a psychotherapist and psychodrama therapist. After several years of marriage and a number of years in which Dr. Peterson served as a Navy psychiatrist, the couple and their growing family settled permanently in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts at “Hickory Hill,” the home they held and loved for many decades. Children and grandchildren loved roaming the hills and cliffs of the property where the Petersons raised 5 children: Julia J Peterson, Norvell L. Peterson, Jr., Johanna Peterson Ruoff, Joel T. Peterson and Joshua W. Peterson. In the 1980's, with her children grown, Beatrice took the opportunity to further expand her skill base and licensures with a BS in Accounting from Salem State, a Nurse Practitioner degree and license, and an MS in Geriatrics.
In addition to her nursing and therapy activities over the years, Beatrice remained a faithful and active participant in the Cape Ann Bible Church in Gloucester and in The Christian Women's Club of Beverly. Throughout her life she served her Savior and prayed earnestly for her family and friends. She also lovingly mentored young women including her nieces Beatrice Kallina-Bursi who carries on her name , Ingeborg Margaret Oncken, and daughter in law Kellie Ann.
Beatrice was devoted to her husband Norvell, who predeceased her by nearly 20 years in December of 1997. Especially lately, she had been looking forward to the day when she could join him. Together, they are now rejoicing in heaven with their Savior and their brothers and sister who predeceased them – Emanuel John Kallina, Jr., Margaret Kallina Oncken, Edmund Frank Kallina, and Robert Wooding Kallina.
In addition to her 5 grown children Beatrice leaves behind one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, 5 nephews and 3 nieces.
An open memorial service to celebrate the gift of her life God bestowed upon those she so loved and cared for will be held for Beatrice on June 26th at Otis Air National Guard Base at 158 Reilly St, Buzzards Bay, MA 02542. A combined viewing and service is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM with burial beside her husband at the Otis cemetery. The family is being gently cared for by the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA 02532.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Cape Ann Bible Church, Gloucester, MA or Samaritans Purse.
