He passed peacefully at the age of 94, Tuesday, October 15th, 2025 at 10:25 A.M. after a continuous decline resulting from a fall and recent stroke. He was being cared for at Bourne Manor Extended Care, Bourne, MA 02532.
The previous day, October 14th, 2025, Charles was honored in a pinning ceremony for his courage on the battlefield, leadership in law enforcement, and lifetime of service with hopeful inspiration to all who wear the uniform - both military and police alike. Charles represented everything we hold sacred - service, sacrifice, integrity, and love of country.
In attendance was State Representative Steve Xiarhos, Massachusetts Police Association, Chief Of Wrentham, Chief Of Plainville, Chief Of Bourne, Chief Of Kingston, Chief Of Bridgewater, Police Comrades, Gold Star Father, American Post 188, Commander and US Army veteran Ray Tourville, Chaplain Nick, Continuum Hospice, Bourne Manor Staff, and Family to give this American hero his final salute.
Born in Norwood, MA, son of the late Catherine Mae and Charles Paine Woodward, Sr., he attended Walpole High School before enlisting in the US Army where he served as a corporal in the Korean War.
At just 19 years of age, Corporal Woodward served in the 1st Cavalry Division one of the most perilous operations of the Korean War - the first crossing of the 38th Parallel into North Korea in October 1950. Under devastating enemy fire, his company of 150 men was nearly wiped out. Critically wounded by a gunshot to the abdomen, he held his position for hours until rescue arrived - a testament to extraordinary valor and faith. Corporal Woodward was later awarded the honors earned - among them: The Purple Heart (for wounds received in combat), The Army of Occupation Medal - Japan, The Korean Service Medal, with two campaign stars, The National Defense Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, and The Republic Of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Following his military service, Charles continued a life devoted to duty, pursuing a career in law enforcement where he held different civil service occupations throughout the years: Walpole State Prison Corrections Officer, Massachusetts State Police Academy - 1st Graduating Class in 1956, Wrentham Police Officer Patrolman, Wrentham Police Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit, Plainville Chief Of Police, Wrentham Police Sergeant, and Blue Knights Member.
Our Charlie thrived on law and order. He was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting, archery, fishing, underwater diving, and also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson countryside. He had a good natured attitude welcoming family and friends whenever they dropped by...An ice cold beer or coffee brandy beverage would be readily available. Sit down and stay awhile. He loved good conversation and sharing stories.
Charles Paine Woodward, Jr. is survived by 6 children: Shelley (Woodward) (Dubois) Maddox, Karen (Woodward) (Lewis) Dolan, Lawrence J. Woodward, Charles P. Woodward, III., James Woodward, Sr., Kimberly Woodward, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, sister Christine F. (Woodward) Davis and her husband Donald Davis, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother James Robert Woodward and Widow Bernadette (Burgess) Woodward.
A committal service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, located on Connery Ave, Bourne, MA, 02542, United States. The service is scheduled for October 22, 2025 at 12:30PM.
Following the ceremony, the family will welcome all attendees to a repast held at the American Legion at 20 Main Street Sandwich, MA beginning at 1:30 p.m.
God Bless Charles Paine Woodward, Jr.
