David was born on June 12, 1947, to David and Gertrude (Healey) McCutcheon (both deceased) in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1965. He joined the United States Navy and served from 1965 through 1968 on the USS Enterprise CVA(N) on the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam and was later stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco, California.
Dave worked at the Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Massachusetts for over 25 years. His contributions in support of the men and women that protect this great country were unlimited. Dave oversaw the electrical design of a significant enabling program for the Department of Defense and the Department of Army as a member of the Force Provider Team. He deployed numerous times all over the world to ensure the well-being of United States soldiers. Dave was a great team member and was so talented that he was called upon by dozens of agencies and organizations to solve complex technical issues. He was well respected by his peers and leaders and was awarded numerous awards and commendation medals for his selfless service to the country.
David enjoyed fishing both in the oceans of Rhode Island and the lakes and streams of Maine. He was a skilled hunter and was fortunate to win two permits for moose hunting in Maine and take part in three successful moose hunts. He was also a fabulous cook and he and his beloved wife Joyce enjoyed entertaining in their home much to the delight of their friends and family. For many years they hosted a Christmas morning waffle breakfast in their home which was a tradition so many looked forward to each year.
Dave participated in his children’s activities by being a scoutmaster and coach. He delighted in his granddaughters’ interests trying to see as many sporting events and dance recitals as he could. He loved playing with his granddaughters if it meant taking them fishing, gathering frogs, playing with doll houses or building drizzle sandcastles on the beach. His imagination in making up games to entertain them was limitless and his genuine enthusiasm was obvious by the sheer joy on his face when doing so.
Dave is survived by his wife of almost 17 years, Joyce (Holmes) McCutcheon who he told so many was the love of his life. They spent 22 years in love and shared a passion for beautiful beaches, the ocean and the stunning greenery, lakes and mountains of Maine, their summer home.
