

He was 74 years old. John was born in Syracuse, NY on February 16,1951.
John spent most of his life in the Upper Valley, NH, where he loved to sail and dance, teaching swing dance and salsa dance. He also enjoyed DJing, first as a local Sunday morning radio host and later at dance events. Upon retirement John devoted himself to Parkinson's advocacy, participating in many support groups and encouraging people to get involved. Especially close to his heart was getting Parkinson's patients involved in cycling and exercise programs. John was very proud and grateful for his work as Research Ambassador with the Parkinson's Foundation.
John is survived by his daughter, Shannon Sillanpaa and her spouse Alex; his son Patrick Tomeny and his spouse Liz; his son Evn Tomeny and his spouse Molly, and their mother Nancy Tomeny; his son Matthew Tomeny and his mother Sandra Tomeny, and his beloved granddaughters Ella and Annie. He is also survived by his sister Karen Thornton, his sister-in-law Donna Gorenstein, his sister Barbara Hansmeyer, his half brother Danny Gorenstein, his niece Kimberly Sasek, his cousins Amy Thornton and Meg Thornton, his great nephew Blake Gorenstein, his great niece Brooklynn Gorenstein, and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John was predeceased by his adoptive parents Jack and June Cook, his parents, Robert Tomeny and Helen Gorenstein, his brother David Tomeny, his sister Carrol Gittings, his brother-in law Eddie Thornton and his niece Stephanie Gorenstein.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the amazing nurses Dad had with him. Kristen Hyde and Back Nine Nurses, Juliana Machado and her amazing staff at We Care Nursing and the wonderful nurses at Beacon Hospice. We also wish to thank all the staff at Laurentide at Mashpee Commons for making him a home.
A private family service will be held in Syracuse NY next summer.
A memorial Swing Dance will be held in Norwich, VT at some point in the future.
