Marion Catherine Mortensen, born August 28th 1935 in Somerville MA, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Saturday, May 24th at home. Known as Pat, Patsy, Mom, and most importantly Nana. She was the loving wife of Austin “Bob” Mortensen (Papa). Although she missed her beloved husband very much, Nana showed strength to her family as she continued to show them her love and support. The Mortensen family is at peace knowing Nana and Papa are dancing together again in heaven.
She was the beloved daughter of the late James and Marion Davison. She was the loving sister of Mary Walukiewicz of NH, the late James Davison Jr. and his wife Jennie Davison of Somerville and their families. The Mortensen Family legacy will live on through their large family. She is survived by her children Patty and husband George Rucker, Bob and his wife Lynne Mortensen, Cathie and her husband Richard Cox, and Dottie and her husband Scott Griffith; Grandchildren Christine, Ronald, Katie, Theresa, Robert, Liz, Daniel, Jason, Nick, Laura, Scott, Craig, and Sean; Great-grandchildren Emma, Mary, Toby, Bailey, Paul, James, Anna, Noah, Isla, Nora, Josh, Madison, Kailey, Quintin, Aiden, Aubrey, Austin, and the apple of her eye the youngest Amelia.
Nana Mortensen was so fortunate to have a huge support system that allowed the family to fulfill her wishes to stay at home. Besides her loving family, she had her “friend” Sue who cared lovingly for Dad and Mom for the past seven years, Jessica our angel and her Beacon hospice team, Brian and Kay her neighbors who watched over her daily and lastly her granddaughter Chrissy and husband Jim who moved in with mom last year to help.
While living in Somerville, she worked for Sears and Robuck and when she moved to Cape Cod she spent many years working at the Buzzards Bay A&P. She retired early so she could provide care for her sick mother.
Anyone who stepped into Nana and Papa Mortensen’s house was welcomed like family. She was famous for her secret meatball recipe and when she announced she was making meatballs and spaghetti everyone would be streaming in through the back door for dinner. Holidays were huge. The entire family gathered for over 50 years every Christmas eve and would end the night with the 12 days of Christmas. Nana sang her part “five golden rings” beautifully every year. Each year the family had a big Easter breakfast and an annual Easter egg hunt. Only weeks ago mom sat in the yard watching all the kids collect their eggs as the cardinal sang loudly from the top of the birch tree. She loved attending all her grandkids and great-grandkids sporting events, school plays, recitals, concerts, birthdays, graduations, and weddings. There is no denying hockey was her favorite sport. She spent so many years at the Gallo Ice Arena watching all her grandkids play hockey. She would be all dressed in purple screaming loudly from the bleachers. She loved playing bingo with her longtime friend Janet, reading, and crosswords. She enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas, Paradise Island, Disney World and New Hampshire. She was a huge New England sports fan and loved watching Tiger Woods play golf. She enjoyed going out to dinner with her family. Last weekend she enjoyed a nice meal at her favorite restaurant, Mezza Luna and went out to get her favorite ice cream, Peppermint Stick.
Family will welcome everyone for visitation at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home MacArthur Blvd. on Friday May 30th from 9am-1030am, followed by Mass at St. Margaret’s church at 11am. Burial immediately following church services at the Massachusetts National cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 stjude.org or Beacon Hospice 32 Resnick Road Plymouth, MA 02360.
