Arthur "Brother" Conway, proprietor of the historic Railroad Inn in Old Bowie for 56 years, left us on August 18, 2011. A purveyor of pizza, beer and local tales, Brother was a fixture in Bowie and will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends. Many children in Bowie grew up enjoying Railroad Inn pizza, he loved greeting the little ones and watching them grow. Some families recall being a patron and being served for 4 generations. He was quick to lend a buck and extend credit to anyone in need. Brother was an avid fan of thoroughbred horse racing, owning and betting many a horse. He was extremely proud that the Conway family was one of the founding families of Bowie. He enjoyed discussing the history of Bowie and sharing his many stories of his hometown. He was a WW II Army veteran, received the WW II Victory Medal. During WW II he was also in the U. S. Coast Guard and a member of the National Maritime Union. Brother had a sense of humor beyond compare, we will all miss that devilish grin, shock of gleaming white hair and twinkle in his eye.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Conway of Bowie, MD, his son Michael and his wife Marcia Conway; four grandchildren Becky, Patrick and his wife Jerris, David, and Misty and her husband Jeff; seven great-grandchildren Easton, Mason, Karson, Erica, Anna, Lindsay and Jacob. Sister-in-law Karen Hopkins, her children Rick and Helen. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and several special family friends Dixie, Bear and Donna. Being a businessman in Bowie for many years Brother had many valued customers and employees who became friends that were near and dear to his heart. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ellen and his loving son Patrick, three brothers and one sister.
